Anyone have experience with a Capstan gas powered rope winch
Thinking this may come in handy at times for pulling elk out of the woods, when they are a ways from trail and electric winch on vehicle....looks like most use Honda motors, would like to hear of anyone's experiences, thanks.

Only experience is with a chainsaw attachment of said, Husky big power variety. They're not fast and you want no stretch rope but it's a helluva lot better than having to have 5 guys' pack out a bull during warm weather from that canyon!
Keep in mind you'll be hooking up multiple times depending on the distance, rope stretch, obstacles etc. Minimum 2 people to operate given a decent bull; one to run the winch, one to keep the hangups to a minimum. We've also used them on snowmobiles over the "edge". REM7600 |
From doing a bit of research they sure look handy. What part of the country have you used them in? Looks like loggers have used them for some time. I am looking at a PCW5000, with Honda 50 cc motor.

I have seen them in use here in Vermont dragging a whole moose out of a bog. Very slow going and it required lots of different grabs. Once they got it on dry land the horses did the rest.
