considering doing a moose hunt in 2018 anybody have a great outfitter etc thinking of Newfoundland

I have a moose/bear hunt booked the last week of September 2018 in Newfoundland with my daughter. I did a lot of research and narrowed it down to a few outfitters listed below. I chose Buck Lake Adventures as they seemed to be the best fit for me. Roger Sheppard is the owner and is a great guy that takes great animals. If you talk with him, tell him Rob from Vermont sent you.

Something else to consider is that it may be hard to get the prime week in a good outfit being just a year out. I booked my hunt spring of 2016 because I wanted that last week in September.

If you check out Buck Lake on Facebook they have a ton of pictures posted.

You might also look into Alberta. They have similar size Moose as Newfoundland, but probably much closer for you since you are in WI.

I've been applying for so long I can't remember when I first started without looking it up. Of course I didn't draw today :(

I am returning to NF in 2018 with my previous outfitter , Patey and Sons. We had a great hunt two years ago, and are greatly excited to go back. It is a fly in hunt, one on one guides, as all of NF is, close to guaranteed hunt (lots of moose). Very well organized, great people, great communications. From what we have been able to understand, success is very consistent throughout the season, just how you hunt may vary (calling, spot and stalk). We went early in the season to optimize the quality of the meat.
If you are hoping for 2018, don't waste any time. outfitters are filling up quickly at this point.

I didn't know the meat taste changes during the season. Please explain.

Per our conversations with many guides and repeat hunters prior to our hunt, overactivity, hormones, and other rutting behavioer (including the habit of bulls lapping up cow urine) strongly taints the meat in the rut period, sometimes making it inedible.
If we wanted the best possible quality meat, without a question we were recommended to go as early in the season as possible away from the rut, or as late after as possible.Earlier being much better. In Newfoundland, timing with the rut isn't important for success as the very high success rate is consistent throughout the season, bulls just are easier to call during the rut.
