Bought my first preference points!

Well, bought my first preference points for Wyoming Antelope. Now the research begins. Hoping to go either next fall or in 2018. Should be six of us in my group.

Good luck. I hope it is better managed in Wyoming than in some of the other western states.

Six hunters in one party should make for a fun hunt.

I hope everyone in your party has purchased points also as they are averaged. With even one point your choice of units will certainly be increased. To me it seems that the next big step from the one point units are the ones that take three or four points.

Some guys even troll the web sites looking for someone that has a bunch of points that they can include in their party to raise the average. Slugs.

Are you planning to take two vehicles, or three?

Bocajnala 10-15-2016 08:50 AM

Yes, we all are getting points this year. It'll be three vehicles... two from ohio/PA area, and one uncle and his son coming from Colorado springs north. I'll be doing lots of reading looking for units with public land and plenty of antelope. Not after trophys, just would like to get some. We'll have two youth hunters with us as well.

A am sure that you have seen the draw results (https://wgfd.wyo.gov/WGFD/media/cont...ONRES_2016.pdf). Some units can be a real zoo on opening day and weekends with spooky pronghorns running at the sight of a vehicle at a half mile away but it is fun anyhow. I like to pick up a doe tag too if they are available. The doe tags are very inexpensive and it lets a fellow keep on hunting after he has a buck in the cooler.
I think that if I had one point that a unit like 007 or 026 would be attractive. I usually hunt somewhere around Natrona County (Casper region) but lately I have been saving up points for a Red Desert hunt and just accompanying my wife as she chases pronghorns. She just loves pronghorn hunting.

I have looked at them, but they are a little confusing. When I look at unit 007 for example I see that it has 100% draw for 1 preference point. So we would probably get drawn there. But still not necessarily a guarantee because thats just how last year went. It looks like unit 7 has decent public land access as well.....

So being new to this style of hunting... should we look to go opening day and the following week? or later in the season?

Thank you for posting about your preference points. As soon as I saw your post I thought oh no I have bought mine for deer. It's done now!

Bocajnala 10-16-2016 05:59 AM

I bought deer as well but that will be several years down the road. Figure when I finally go for mule deer I'll have plenty of points and go for a big one.

It is a roll of the dice. There are more trucks running around on opening day and on most weekends and game gets very spooky, but later in the season many bucks have left the area in the back of a pickup truck. After you focus on a unit it might be easier for you to decide about the timing.

With a couple youth hunters along I would bet that most of the "spot and stalk" opportunities start from the seat of a truck. In most units you will see pronghorns often somewhere in the distance. Finding the right one and making the stalk are where most of the fun is for me.
