Depends on where you want to hunt but I'd have to recomend Surestrike outfitters 505-757-6176
We hunt the Pecos and the Gila.Ask for Richard Ley if he's booked ask about his buddy next door Eric Roybal. If we can't do it for you try USO up in Taos NM.

I also Highly recommend All American Outfitters. My guide (Mike Najar) had me in elk every day (rifle tag). You can't go wrong with Brandon. Forget USO, waist of time. Mick Chappel would be another good choice for NM. I live in CO 7 haven't used any guides here, so don't know who to recommend. Later......Bryan

Elk Meister,
I'm just curious, when you hunted NM were you hunting on a land owner permit or a public draw tag?? I've heard some bad stuff about USO's public land hunts but I know that they have some real good private ranches sowed up as well. I'm really not defending USO, really couldn't care less don't get me wrong, I'm just trying to get a better picture of what's up. Where did you hunt with American what unit or general area if you can remember I'd sur appreciate it.

I drew a 16A rifle bull tag 1st time(wow!) Oct 13 last year. Used All American as an outfitter(terriffic!) and guide. We hunted pretty much about half the unit and found heards each morning & evening. Opening morning saw herd of 20 cows,3 rag horns, & a 360 class herd bull all together, that afternoon saw 30 cows, 6 rag horns, and a 380 class bull, but had a bad shot so we let him go( bad mistake!). on the 4th afternoon found that same herd coming off a mesa down to the bottom for the nite & soon as the bulls started over, a USO plane came treetop high over us , circled 3 times and ran the herd off (pretty pissed off!!) Got the plane # and gps location(was a USO plane) but i guess it don't matter in NM. Had a great hunt and will try to draw again this year. Did find a set of 360 sheds while treking through the trees, so not all wasted. Most of the area we covered was close to Reserve on the north end of 16A if your familar with that unit. I'll let you know if any of us draw or not. Have you hunted 16A before?

Elk Miester,
Wow that is some good luck to draw a unit 16a tag. Yes we do hunt unit 16 (we hunt all of the Gila) our other office is in Luna NM. Not to far from reserve. We mainly do private land humts down there as the drawing is a tough one. A land owner bull tag sells for around $5000.00 plus the hunt. So it's pretty much for the well endowed hunters. If you do draw a Tag down in that area your going to see Elk that's a great area. We offer public land hunts down in 15 and 16 for those fortunate enoough to draw.
I personally drew a Valle Vidal tag last year WOW what a great hunt. I only had a cow tag but I saw 2-300+ head of Elk every day and a bull that was in the 400 class and 380 class bulls were like rats in the sewer. But that's a once in a life time draw for bulls and it is a fantastic area. If you ever have the fortune of drawing a Valle tag you've got to have horses to do it right. Many of the guys were just driving up the raod all day and not seeing anything. Well if you get 1 mile off road that's where you start seeing them the sign looks like friggin Elk dozers have been working the area over it was the coolest Elk hunt I've ever been on.
Anyway I degress.
As far as the guy flying over your Elk do you think he saw you guys and was trying to spook the Elk off or was he spotting Elk from the air and just happened to fly over you guys. It's not illegal to fly over game anytime in any state unless your spotting for hunters on the ground or there are some time limits between the time that you fly and the time that you hunt in some states.
In anycase I know how frustrating that scenario can be. It's happened to me several times in AK Caribou hunting. Once after a long crawling stalk I was just getting to position on a huge bull when here comes a plane and buzzes the heard. I wanted to shoot that SOB down, but hey these things happen.
