Default What is right with hunting show?

I am new to this forum so let me set a couple things right. I am not and anti fishing, I am a school teacher and out door writer. Spell check is my best friend so don' t be proud if you find 1 million mistakes.

I live here in Maine and own a small up start video production company. We are a couple of guys that have regular jobs and try to put out a couple films a year. We guide here in maine for bear and turkey and travel for deer and everything else. We do not have the budget to go on high end hunts and most often hunt with regular people that know thier area like we know ours.

My point is I read the post about all the things wrong with hunting shows. I read all the angry ones and the response from the videographer. I undestand the need to cover costs. We are pumped when we pick up a new sponsor, it helps us travel . I did however see what is turning people off and and will try to use this kowlege.
All that said, what do people like in a hunting video or tv show? my e-mail is [email protected] or www.outdooradventurecompany.com

Chris, you appear to be an honest sportsman and businessman with the future of our hunting heritage in mind. The non-hunting public sees enough of the " dark side" of hunting as shown on television and through contact with slob hunters. Portray our sport in a positive and ethical manner and I am confident that your business endeavor will thrive.
Thanks for asking for my input.

I would say, show the hunt after the shot. The tracking, the field dressing, quartering etc. The hunt is far from over. There is more to the hunt than just the shot and photos. Thanks for asking what we want to see.

Not showing the kill shot bugs me. Good luck.

I would like to see a show that is more concerned with herd dynamics than with killing the monster trophy all the time. Dont get me wrong i love seeing the giant bucks and bulls this country has to offer, but a program needs to be informative also.

Maybe a short interview with a biologist in that area, kind of a this is what were doing and this is what we are trying to accomplish type of thing.

Also I like the information on the good hunters do, not for a single species but all species that inhabit an area i.e. guzzlers, habitat restoration, and game transfers.

We as hunters have either directly or indirectly brought several species back from the brink of extinction (pronghorn antelope, wild turkey, american bison) .

In my personal opinion anything that is putting hunters in the spotlight should be done in the best possible taste.

And speaking of taste i do enjoy some new recipies on cooking wild game once in a while also.

Personally I like the hunting shows on tv now, but I agree with those that say they are too commercialized and only seek trophy animals. To me a good show tells a story about the hunt, not just 60 seconds of footage showing a trophy harvested. One small show, can' t remeber the name, the entire 30 min show was on this guy scouting and finding a stand location, what he looked for and signs that he saw, then showed footage of his first time in the stand and harvesting a nice deer. I learned more from that show that from 4 hours of the major shows.

I think a great idea would be to have a show, dedicated to kids getting to hunt and their experiences and excitement.

ya i' d like to see a few unsuccessful hunts or days where things didn' t go their way. cause thats how it is in real life the big buck doesn' t always come or sometimes u get winded. also i' d reall like to watch them tracking a bit more not shut the camera off find the animal the walk back 50 steps then approach with the film rolling. Something else i don' t understand about those shows is how come they only shoot once. Watched a program here last week where a lady shot at a buck and how the shot hit and the way the buck folded he was gut shot. She watches the buck run off 100 yards then into the bush. well here we shoot till its down if possible. I guess maybe that isn' t the right image to give to the public that hunters are trigger happy i was just curious cause i have never seen more than 1 shot why is this?

Rogue said it well, throw in some herd mangagement, talk about how much hunters give to nature by doing what they do, and monetarily. Also, how bout some hunts that just do not go well. How about some of the hunts for elk when your ass is snowed in, you drop your rifle, a horse throws you because the dumby was spooked by a twig breaking. Show how tough it is to pack out meat, and don' t just go on the rich man' s guided hunts with the million dollar lodge and fire place. Show the do it yourself-er in Colorado sleeping in a tent, eating some MRE' s and such. Show people how hunting is not shooting, but instead an athletic endeavor. Good luck man, keep checking back with us.

Hi there.....just curious, you say you guide for turkey and bears here in Maine but travel for everything else. Do you go out of state for deer, and if so, how come? I live and hunt in northern Maine where the deer population is fairly low when compared to most places, but the bucks are big! I' ve always been dissapointed with the lack of shows/videos that portray real big woods hunting such as I' m used to. Show me some tracking, still hunting, stump sitting footage from the Maine woods and I' ll be a happy camper! Leave the guided, crop field, deer feeder, rattling, ranch hunting stuff to the other guys, it' s all been done before anyway! Just my .02 - It would be refreshing to see a change of pace in hunting shows.
