Hard to believe, but my company is sending me on a hunting trip!.........
I was on here last month asking for Co hunting tip for my very first elk hunt. You all gave me some fantastic advice and I am very grateful!
Well... I just won an award from my employer.... "a vacation of my choice"!!!
So I am thinking an elk hunting trip!
So instead of having to do it really cheaply now, I figured I would pick your brains again for any highly regarded elk outfitters in ANY state.
Once again, I am a meat hunter so I am not "looking" for a trophy.... that is not to say that a big ole bull would be out of the question
So basically if you had the chance to hunt elk on your companies money, where would you go?
I think the max is about $5,000
I am not looking for a "canned" hunt, heck I'd even do a drop in camp, and do the work myself!
Thank you all for your continued support of this newbie!!
* looks like I missed the April 1st entry for 1st season CO, right?

If it were me, I'd consider a traditional horseback hunt with wall tents, etc. (kind of a bucket list item). I've hunted elk several times and it's a blast but I have never hunted off horseback where you ride up country to a wall tent camp in God's country. $5,000 might be just a little low but you could easily add in what you planned for a "cheap" hunt and find a very nice hunt with a good chance at a nice bull. Some members here have been on that specific type of guided horseback hunt and can probably recommend somebody and others members are actually outfitters and could give you lots of pointers on what to look for, even if you're not hunting with them. Good luck and enjoy the heck out of this wonderful opportunity!!

If you're talking about going in 2014 or even 2015 and don't have any preference points in a western state, then look for a landowner tag in NM, UT, or CO. Some of those can be set up as a DIY hunt, while others can be the whole enchilada out of a cabin or tent on horseback.
