North of Elko up around Tuscarora and Midas on north to the border has some good elk habitat and we were into elk every day during the two week archery hunt my buddy drew last year.

do you know what hunt area number it is

Topgun 3006 02-15-2014 09:34 AM

I don't have the number of the unit, but it was the archery bull elk hunt from 8/20--9/16 that covered the entire area north and northwest of Elko up to the border adn way over to the west well past Midas. We could see Midas from the top of the mountain chain we were on.

are there any other good areas

From what I have heard it is very, very difficult to get tags in NV. Unless there is some underlying reason why you need to do the elk hunt there, I'd be looking at one of the states that have bigger herds and offer better odds for getting a tag.

Actually Flags, NV has one of the most fair draw systems of any of the wesern states and my buddy had only been putting in for his tag for about 5or 6 years. NV also is a sleeper state as far as elk numbers go and the quality of bulls is right up there with AZ. I was very impressed with the entire area up there where we went last year.

is Utah any good for elk hunting

westernboy1996 02-16-2014 08:28 AM

the reason I want to hunt in Nevada is coming up with the extra money and the extra time to go on a out of state hunt

***About the only way to hunt a good bull elk in Utah the way their system is set up would be to buy tag on private property through their CWMU program. Colorado had a Ranching For Wildlife program where ranches that are enrolled set their own seasons, but they are also very expensive compared to a DIY hunt. You might think about buying a Preference Point the next two summers in Wyoming and then get a general tag with those two PPs that entitles you to hunt in over 50 different units in tha state. PPs for elk are $50. The elk herds are booming in most areas, other than around Yellowstone where the wolves and bears are not doing them any good.
