Just starting my research regarding area 61 Elk hunting (rifle). My boys and I are in the process of accumulating preference points. What is the bare minimum points a person should have before applying for a bull tag in this unit?

Below is what our unit 61 outfitter states on PP needed to draw elk in unit 61.
"You will need at least 15 preference points to draw a license for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th and 16 points for the 1st season, so plan this hunt in advance.
Landowner vouchers are available for an additional fee but are limited."

Right now, it takes 19 points for the first season and 16 for all the other rifle season for unit 61 if you are a non resident. For the residents, it takes 11 for the first season and 7-8 for the remaining rifle seasons. Like the person said earlier, that changes every year, but in my opinion, I wouldn't even try to apply until you hit that 16 mark, but by then, it will probably take a lot more than that. Good luck.

And remember, it takes one more year than your total PP number to get picked. In other words, if you could draw with 10 points, it takes 11 years to draw. And it WILL be considerably more than that by the time you get drawn, so unless you are willing to wait more than 20 years, you might want to look elsewhere.
