Packing out Quarters--What are your must have items?
 

Sometimes you can't drive to your kill site and have to pack out your animal. Here are ten items I carry. I go into detail at the link below. What do you carry for quartering and packing out and why?

1. Havalon Piranta knife
2. SOG hatchet
3. Pillow Cases
4. MR Crew Cab pack
5. Latex Gloves
6. Hand Sanitizer
7. Parachord
8. Zip Locks
9. Medical Kit with skin closure options, (I cut myself occasionally)
10. Head lamp

All I need to get an elk out is:

2 knives (Havalon and Case Trapper)
6 game bags
parachute cord
small first aid kit
pack frame

I haven't packed out an elk bone in a long time. I use the gutless method and bone mine where they hit the ground. I always have a packframe with me with a small daypack on it with my regular hunting kit.

I use the gutless method, and bone out all the meat.

citrus spray to keep bugs off

A couple of nice strong young guys that want to impress you with their ability to carry out a full quarter by themselves so they can get an invite to elk camp next year!!!

One of the common things used here is one of those plastic tough sleds.. They can do wonders if conditions are right. There has been a lot of bears brought out using them as well.

I really liked the saddle panniers for my horses...

I second the Havalon, used it for the first time this year, wow! Never go in the sticks without again. Also recommend BVA pac bags, and I use a Cutco as my secondary blade. After that, I highly recommend mules;)

I'm all for the pack stock on this one.....

Must haves... A knife, some bags and my backpack.

The Piranta is awesome for skinning, but I still like a regular knife for deboning. I also like a little pocket sharpener, gloves make clean up easier, I like a emergency blanket to use as a staging area to set the meat on while I'm getting it ready to put in the bags. I like the Caribou brand bags the best. Really like the load shelf on my new Stone Glacier backpack.

Knife, game bags, and a frame pack. I also use the gutless method.

The best investment I found was a meat hook!! Keeps your fingers a long way away from the knife and can hold the meat without slipping. Also a good boning knife with a 8 inch blade. http://www.amazon.com/Dexter-Russell...ords=meat+hook

I agree with the horse idea

I do use a havalon to skin but use the more common. cheaper and shorter size 20 blades. Much easier and less broken blades. Good quality fixed blade knife for the bulk of the work and have a small sharpening apparatus in my day pack if needed. If I am packing with a decker pack saddle I also use an axe to cut the elk into 4 large quarters, barrel hitch the hind quarters, basket hitch the fronts, tie on the horns and we are gone! This elk I used a sawbuck and panniers.

Having a great pack can make a world of difference. I use the Horn Hunter Full Curl System. Use the full system for packing in and then it strips down to a great frame pack when the work begins. Great company and outstanding customer service.

TAG Bags BOMB (Boned Out Meat Bags) are an essential. They only weigh 10 ounces for the whole set, but you can fit a boned out bull musk ox in them. Hands down the best game bags around.
