Hunting Slang, Terms, and Phrases
 
Share some sayings that you have gathered over the years...

Gettin' Skunked: Unsuccessful day of hunting/ fishing
Sky Scrapin': When waterfowl hunters shoot at birds that are too high
MacDaddy: The big buck
Ladies Day: Jokingly willing to shoot at does because of a lack of bucks
Eye Guards: Brow tines
Buck Fever: An elevated heart rate that occurs when a deer steps into view
Flush: Scare an animal from cover
Greenheads: Mallard Drake
Sprig: Pintail
Honkers: Canadian Geese
Fork-N'-Horn: 2 Point Western Count Buck
"Saw Hair But No Horns!": Saw does but no bucks

spray and pray = shooting from the hip while driving for deer.

Let get it on record I DONT CONDONE this method. We have rednecks here that get in their gangs drink beer and drive deer.

When hunting deer we call female deer "Baldies" instead of does.

Propeller heads, slick heads = does
Knot head = little buck
Mossy nuts = big old buck

Nuttier than squirrel sh*t = the guy in camp that says he routinely kills elk at 600 yards.

Mexican pigeon = Widgeon
Fire fly = the guy who comes to camp and hangs around the fire and drinks but rarely hunts.

Ground checking = a southern term for shooting any deer you see then checking it once it is on the ground to find out if it's legal.

Interesting, we tend to call any buck who's primary habitat is in swamp bottom that as they tend to be a unique hunting experience.

Not really all that intreasting.all the old timers refer to moose as swamp donkeys since moose love swamp land.a buck that lives in the swamp is a swamp buck.If you google whats a swamp donkey on defanition is moose the others arent animal related.one refures to kissing an ugly girl the other refures to sweaty....well you can go see yourself lol

_uck Buck= one you don't have to count points or judge because it is so huge and because it is the first word usually out of your mouth. This is the best way to judge animals!:biggrin:

Swamp Donkey has another definition that I learned by doing a search for it once, and it ain't too nice!

Yes swamp donkey is also negatively associated with an ugly woman raping men too drunk to defend themselves but where not going off that road I learned that googling as well. is interesting to say the least if some city folk come walking by and hear ya say just got that swamp donkey earlier this morning they might not know what to do.

Also mud bug = craw dad = crayfish or crawfish or freshwater lobster

Eating tag soup: unsuccessful hunter has not been able to tag a downed big game animal and is forced to eat his tag since he has no game meat to eat.

Sky bustin: shooting at birds on the wing too far away and/or too high (another applied the term 'sky scraping' in an earlier post for this same concept).

Raghorn: a bull elk with legal but sub-trophy sized antlers

Piss cutter: a small Bull Elk or Mule Deer buck. This seems to be an expression used almost exclusively by hunters from Utah.

Draw: a ravine or other valley-like feature of the land -- but smaller than a valley.

Bench: a flat or flattish point along a mountain ridge.

Park: an open grassy area in the mountains. Elk sometimes like to feed in parks.

Party Meat: Antlerless deer taken with party tag by huge gang of hunters, generally taken down with 6 or more rounds of ammo

Cow: What seemed like a nice sized party meat deer. Gang no longer hunts on or near this land.

Is the six rounds manditory and if so how much good meat is left?and is that the reason a person can no longer hunt a "cow"?
