Help Judge this Moose
 

Hello,

I am a new member hoping to find some help regarding field judging a couple moose. I have been drawn on a tag that took 11 years. This will be my first moose hunt. I recently took these pictures of two bulls and need help field judging them. Let me know what you think. I am guessing #1 is about 48" and #2 is 46" but I am not very confident. Thanks in advance.

#1 This bull ran across the road in front of me the day before I planned to go scouting.

My judgement would be that either one would be great on the grill with some bbq scauce.

second one is bigger...but either would be a trophy!

I am inclined to agree that rack wise the second one is bigger. I also believe weight wise the first one is quite a bit bigger. I am guessing this by the back being held up straighter. If you look at both of those moose you will se the hump and the sagging in the second moose more profound which is quite common on younger moose as well as and old moose. A big moose in his prime will have almost a straight line going from the rump to the hump. These ones tend to get up to the 1,000 lb. range in this area ..

This moose was shot by a 81 year old in New Brunswick, Canada. This was just across the river from here and it was 21 points weighing in at 955lbs.. He was carried into a tree stand and shot this moose himself.. I am not sure what the spread was on it.

Interesting stuff Phil. I gotta start paying more attention to that.

I would have to agree with Phil. From the pics the second one looks to have a bigger rack but the body of the first looks bigger. If you want trophy or do you want meat. Either one your gonna get plenty of meat.

Thanks a lot. I am looking for a trophy as the meat will come with whatever that may be. Hopefully I can find either one of these guys again.

I'm estimating mid 40's for the first Bull and upper40's to low 50's
for the second bull. Good luck

I am wondering if you have had your hunt yet? If so how did you do at getting a moose? I am hoping you did great.. If so any pics? We all would enjoy seeing them..
I took a little drive yesterday morning and saw 7 moose in total. Here is a picture of one of them. There was 2 decent bulls there with the biggest one hanging to close to the woods for any decent picture and quickly vanished on me. This one is most likely in the 800 to 900 pound range ( dressed ).. Although not a real big rack on him. The other one had a much bigger rack.
