Physical training status for elk hunting?

How is everyone's physical training to prepare for their fall elk hunt going? Speaking for myself, if I didn't elk hunt I would want to pretend I was an elk hunter just to motivate myself to exercise hard and stay in good condition! I really feel good -- almost wish the elk season started Saturday. Notwithstanding, I still have a few more pounds to trim off, and I plan to boost my training regime just a bit more.

I am 57 years old. I don't train to marathon shape or to super athlete shape. I train to be able to maintain and work for the duration of a 5 day elk hunt and the set-up day on the front end, the take-down day at the back end, and the meat pack-out somewhere in between. This depends more on endurance than maximum power. I do like to work on strong legs for climbing hills. This is an area -- strong climbing legs -- I never feel satisfied with on the hunt. We hunt at about 11000 feet elevation, first rifle season, SW Colorado.

How is your training going?

Muley Hunter 08-08-2013 08:53 AM

The best training for me is to simulate the hunt. That means hiking the mountains at high altitude with a heavy backpack.

Then the hunt is just another day of what i've been doing for months.

You are fortunate in several ways. I live in Texas, north of Dallas, at about 600 foot elevation. We don't even have noteworthy hills around here. I'm stuck walking with a pack with weight in it on relatively flat ground with ankle weights on, running up the modest hills we do have, and doing strength exercises.

You could also wear one of those masks that cuts your oxygen during training. It simulates being at high altitude.

Are you kidding me?!!! If I wore one of those things the cops would shoot me thinking I was trying to perpetrate some terrorist deed!!!

I had never heard of such things. I may look into that further. It does not look very pleasant. I can't imagine reducing the air I have available when I'm running, as I'm sucking air pretty hard at the ends of my runs.

Big Uncle 08-08-2013 10:38 AM

I don't think any mask will fully acclimate a flatlander (like me) to the physical changes that happen at altitudes above 10,000. I do lots of cardio, hike with a pack, and get into elk country a week before the hunt. After a couple of days my body starts becoming more efficient with oxygen, and by the end of the first week things start to feel almost normal.
The central part of my training is to spend an hour or two each day on a stationary bike, and do some sprints up a steep 100 yard incline. Long distance running hurts my knees too much to be of any value.

Muley Hunter 08-08-2013 11:19 AM

The advantage of the mask, or training at altitude is it builds up your red blood cells. You can't get that effect by any other kind of training.

Coming a week early helps, but not everybody can do that.

finnbear 08-08-2013 01:38 PM

I don't do anything different to get ready for hunting season nor do I know anyone around here that does....................... we just get up and go hunting on opening day

Muley Hunter 08-08-2013 01:45 PM

Easy at low altitude when you can drive your truck next to the kill. :p :poke:

Big Uncle 08-08-2013 02:41 PM

I looked at the linked website for the mask. I must say that if it is approved by both MMA fighters and Northern Alberta Institute of Technology it must be the real deal!

That is so much better than being approved by the US Olympic Team and Stanford.

I suspect that I just fell for the joke.

Muley Hunter 08-08-2013 04:50 PM

Do some research. That was only one site.

wyomingtrapper 08-08-2013 05:47 PM

Cardio and strength. You can't have too much of either.

DeweyC 08-09-2013 10:38 AM

Yeah, I've been doing alot of hiking up where I plan on hunting so I get some training in and some scouting done in one shot. I'm also training for a marathon and I throw some kettlebell workouts in for functional strength to help with all the heavy lifting and the like.

I am working on getting in shape for 2014 hunt. Training in central Al. Hitting the eliptical and walking up-down in a hilly area. By no means going to be ready for high altitude. Fortunately will be hunting at about 6000-7000 max. Go so much dam% weight to lose it is pitiful. Trying to work through an 45 year old knee injury from college football days (no ACL in my left knee + torn minicus repairs) and a torn achilles some 10 years back, with the other ione buldged (too dang much racquet ball). Going is tough and progress is slow. I hate to admit it, painful as heck. But I'll get to where I can and it'll be what it'll be.

Lark Bunting 09-03-2013 02:43 PM

I train in January-May to run the Tough Mudder in June, and then just keep up that workout through hunting season...then it's January again and start my training for another Tough Mudder. :)

Colorado Bob 09-07-2013 02:29 PM

I do the stair-climber & this year I added in a rowing machine. I'll be ready come October. Forgot to add i chase grouse in September @ 11000'. That helps a bunch.

Try hiking up & down football bleechers. Bob

Muley Hunter 09-10-2013 11:41 AM

At my age, it would be a no brainer. I'm still trying to find a hunting area I can do that. :cool2:

I live about 200 yards from the Ocean on South Padre Island, Texas so I'm at zero elevation. The only hills I have around here are sand dunes and I do chase my kids around them. I'm hunting GMU 66 in three weeks and I've been doing the stair stepper, exercise bike and lunges at the gym for the last month. I also quit drinking beer and have lost 10 pounds so I'm feeling pretty good but I know I'm in for a challenge. I've got my pack down to 70 lbs and my plan is to just go slow and stay well hydrated to fight off the altitude sickness.

Muley Hunter 09-15-2013 07:13 AM

If you have time to go up in steps. It will be much better than charging up to timberline the first day.

I too live at low altitude with my house on Lake Champlain at 118' ASL. I have been out west on 8 trips in 7 years hunting from 8500 to 11,500 feet and sleeping at 9100 feet. We always go early and scout which gives us time to acclimate to the elevation. On my first year I developed a severe case of altitude sickness on day 1 of scouting which gave me a killer headache and extreme nausea. I worked through it but the next spring when I went for my annual physical I mentioned it to my doctor. He said it was common and prescribed a medicine which he said the military often takes but in higher doses when going in to a high elevation deployment. It is the drug acetazolamide (trade name Diamox) 250 mg and I found it to be quite effective in keeping altitude sickness from even starting. I usually drive out on a 34 hour road trip and start taking the pill once or twice a day 3 days before I arrive and a couple of days after I get there. There is a slight side affect with a funny tingling in my fingers and sometimes my lips and unfortunately any carbonated beverage tastes funny. The great beer taste does come back after you stop taking the med I will add. There is nothing better than being in top shape for high altitude elk hunting but altitude sickness is something entirely different and it can happen to people who are in top shape. The issue is the blood changes and o2 content that is different at altitude. I found that drug to be very effective and it is cheap. I have a friend who lives out in Colorado and when I told him about the altitude sickness issue and the drug he said the home remedy for those who lived out there was to take a full strength aspirin and a tums each day before going up to the mountain. I have the feeling that the drug is not much more than something along that line based in the name. I certainly am not pushing drugs and once again reiterate that there is no better way to prepare for an elk hunt than to get into top shape but the drug might improve the experience for a person who normally lives at low altitude. Once the altitude sickness develops it took me a day or two to get back to feeling good again. No need to go through that.
