Questions about resident hunting in Alaska
 

I was just offered a job in Alaska and was wondering if any residents of Anchorage Alaska could give me insight into hunting there. Are all residents of Alaska allowed a tag for moose each year? How is the moose hunting right around Anchorage? I won't be able to drop big dollars to fly places in Alaska to hunt. What animals are good hunting within a few hour drive of Anchorage? Thank you for your help!

I live in Fairbanks but I have lived in Anchorage. Nearly half the population of Alaska lives in Anchorage so there's plenty of hunting competition around there. There's a few drawing moose hunts on the outskirts of Anchorage but you have to get further away to get into harvest tag areas. Yes you can get a harvest tag for moose every year but there are many areas that also require a drawing permit. Look through the regs and you'll see what opportunities are out there. Anchorage is in Unit 14.

If I was in your shoes I would ask a lot of other questions before even getting to those kind of specific hunting questions. How good of a job offer is this? Can it offset the high cost of living in Alaska? Have you looked at realtor.com or the Anchorage Daily News classified to get an idea of housing prices in Anchorage (hint...they're expensive)? Can you live in a place where it's winter for 7+ months of the year? Will you get enough time off to even get out and go hunting? Hunting trips in Alaska are time consuming. Then you have to ask yourself what kind of hunter are you. Are you a weekend warrior or are you willing to strap on a heavy pack and spend ten days hiking through rugged mountains looking for a legal Dall ram? Are you willing to pack a moose the size of a large draft horse out of a swamp? Are you willing to spend day after day glassing empty tundra in the hopes that a caribou herd will appear?

I'm not trying to rain on your parade, I'm just pointing out the reality of Alaska that most people overlook. Too many people fall in love with the romantic idea of Alaska and they overlook reality.

Jeff has a good point about money. I live in Hawaii and make alot of money compared to everyone back in the states. I dont feel rich by any means and still feel like im living paycheck to paycheck. Alaska is either right below or the highest place for cost of living.

Take for example $1/lime $3/avocado (If I remember right), $5/milk, car repairs are way more expensive, deals which you get in the states are only applicable to the lower 48. Amazon will be your best friend. Well we'll see how this sales tax thing goes. Unless youre gettting at minimum 30% pay hike(I dont know where you're currently at), monetarily, it wouldn't be worth it for me. Expensive is about 4x as expensive as texas.

Just things to keep in mind. But hey if you only work some days out of the year you could show up in deadliest catch and make alot of money that way. With that said, id love to move to alaska once day, anchorage, not fairbanks.
