Whitetail - sit - unless they are nowhere to be found

Mule Deer - Sit early then stalk midday then site again toward dark - over a feeding area

There is no need to sit in a stand for Mule Deer where I am . You sit alright, with good optics, then if you spot something you can stalk. Otherwise you just sit and spot some more.

I use the spot & stalk hunting method. I would fall to sleep in a tree stand & fall out.

Mulies: Standing in the early AM and late afternoon overlooking trails between water and bedding areas. Glassing and stalking bedding areas mid-day.

RE: sit or stalk?

I like to stalk (whitetails) only when the ground is wet, there is a fresh snowfall, the deer are not moving, or there is a steady wind in one direction.

I sit on stand when deer activity is high, such as before a big storm front or immediately after, or when the ground is too noisy for quiet stalking.

i sit until i either freeze or see no deer, then i stalk. depends on where im hunting at as well. Easter river SD i do alot of walking but West river SD i do alot of sitting in the bluffs and then walk the trees if we dont see anything

RE: sit or stalk?

I usually start off with good intentions of sitting and waiting in one spot buy after 20 minutes or so I have to get up and move. I like tracking, walking and stalking or the spot and stalk. I' ve more luck on the ground or in ground blinds that in a tree but I would probably have just as much luck in a tree if I could sit for long enough. I get way too cold just sitting there. I did bring a blanket with me on my last winter bow hunt of the year (2002) and did manage to get a nice big buck within snorting distance, at least that' s what he did when he smelled that old blanket burning and me trying to keep warm by it.:D
