1st Mule Deer Hunt in Montana

This is first time for me to MT for mule deer. We're heading out Oct 25th for a week. We've been doing a fair amount of research and reading online. Looked at lots of different maps and google earth. Reserved several Type II BMA properties. We're not quite sure what to expect on these BMA's. Most are about 30 miles southwest of Ekalaka. Looking at some of the google earth maps it seems like the landscape on a couple of the bma's is fairly barren then as you go west it gets more "bad land" looking.

Does anyone have any experience or general comments on hunting this area? We plan on walking a lot and getting away from the roads to avoid high pressure areas.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Do U have some GPS coordinatesof thes units?Don't get sucked into the old go for the waterholes thing...mulies can be along way from water, because that's where they are hunted by al the idiots!!! If U R hunting high desert I would replace a lot of walking with alot of sitting upas high as U can get and glassing every square inch of terrian U can see and then making a stalk...the worst thing U can do is go wandering aroun and spook all the game frmiles around...............U look at and under, behind and beside every sage bush U see, they can lay down in a open area with foot tall grass and dissaper...........................

Finnbear has some good advice. A good pair of high power binos or a spotting scope will do wonders for your hunt. Those deer wll be moving at first light and then by mid morning settle in for some down time most often in the shade of anything standing including the sage. If you know where they are laying up a good stalk can often be accomplished.

Great advice so far. Just got back from a bow hunt last week. This year is a little different with the drought, Deer are coming to water during the daylight hours.

Here is some footage of my brother's hunt in comparable type land:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sHAI...yer_detailpage
