ELK FIELD DRESSING, SKININN, ETC

I hunt alone most of the time and need a suggestion as to a good way to field dress my elk if I get one. Should I quarter it cased, then gut it and let the meat processor skin it? Or should I try to field skin it cased, then gut it? Whats the best way for a guy to do it alone? I' m puzzled...

I could take up a ton of space writing the method for completely boning all the meat from an elk without gutting it, (does require completely skinning one side at a time) but I know there are at least a couple of guys on this site who know a great link to a complete written process with photos. How ' bout it guys? Can you help him out?

ST: I used to do quite a bit of solo hunting up far and high. If we can find this process, I' ll wager you' ll take to it. Every step with a boned haunch (and other boned parts) as compared to taking out those big elk sticks with the goodies, is certainly the way to go. Once proficient, you' ll save a lot of sweat and your butcher will love you. (may even give you a break on the proccessing) Remember: More often than not, elk fall far from your wheels!

If it is a bull and you want to mount him, you will have to cape him, gut him, skin him, quarter him, and put the quarters in cotton game bags.

If it is a cow do everything but cape her.

If it is a cow or a bull I don' t want to mount, I will skin the animal in one piece making sure to not make any holes in hide, and send the hide to a tannery, and have something made from it. Good luck on your hunt!!
