Default Help Estimating Bear Size

Hunting in Northern WI. Bears need to be 42 inches to be legal. My bro is hunting for his first bear. We have a bait site going and have some bears coming in. Please help me tell if these bears are of size to shoot. We are not looking to kill the new state record, just the first bear ever on our property.

The stump he is next to is 24 inches tall.

Thanks for any help and input!!! Only 2 weeks and these bears are coming in daily.

Looks like 3 cubs to me or possibly 2 cubs and a mom. I would keep looking.

If any of them is a cub, you can't shoot any of them. From the Wisconsin regs:
"It is illegal to:
• Shoot or molest any bear in a den, hunt bear in any dump or
sanitary landfill, or kill a cub or any adult bear accompanied by
a cub or cubs
. (An adult bear is defined as a bear 42 inches
or greater in length, as measured in a straight line from the
tip of the nose to the base of the tail."

That is what we thought, but at the same time never having done this before....we did not want to pass up anything that is legal!
