hunting with a .308
 

I have a serious question as it will be part of a decision on spending a grand for a hunting rifle. an anyone tell me if you can take down an elk with a .308 AR I am loking at a LR 308 for hunting from Rock River

As long as your comfortable and accurate at distances to 300yrds with it.

Yes. The .308 is a great all around caliber. I've killed elk with it, as well as a 30-30. Know and stay within the effective range of the round as well as your own shooting ability.

I watched a video of a woman knocking down an elk at 650yds with a .243. DRT.

I would describe the .308 as serviceable.

Muley Hunter---Your'e probably referring to the gal who went out with John Burns with his gun/adjustable turret scope and shot that cow at a lot further than a .243 should be used on an animal that size. She had never shot that gun and had never even shot at a big game animal before he pulled that stunt just to promote his adjustable turret scopes Ever since that video came out guys have been ripping him a new one on a lot of the long range gun websites and Forums for doing it. If that .243 bullet hadn't hit that animal in the spine, it would probably have resulted in a lost animal. His stupid response to them has been that they are just ticked that it was a girl that did it, rather than addressing the lack of ethics the video portrayed.

I know all that, but it does prove a .308 at normal hunting distances is more than enough bullet. If you can shoot.

No argument from here, as the .308 is very close to the 30-06 ballistics, which is the proven caliber for anything but possibly big bears on the North American Continent! Both will serve the average Joe well on whatever he wants to hunt from varmints to moose.

that is a great article TY since I am a first time hunter I know takingon Elk is a big challenge I am waiting with anticipation to see if I get drawn in the AZ tag lotery if I do I am taking it as a huge challenge and am planning on being as ethical as can be I will not take the shot unless I am 100 percent and am 5x5
