The ultimate open country mule deer cartridge?

What is the Ultimate Western Open Country Mule Deer Cartridge?

Name the cartridge and the type of setup you would want it in.
ie, ultralight, sporter rifle, heavy rifle.
stainless/blued, wood/laminate/synthetic
include barrel length and any other key features you may feel important.

Assume open country mule deer and plenty of stalking/hiking on a hunt.

Light bolt action in 308 or 270 caliber

Medium weight bolt action 25-06 in a synthetic stock, with a 26" blued or stainless barrel/action being up to the individual and using handloads.

.270 win

synthetic, 24" stainless, detachable box magazine, total weight under 7.5 lbs.

I carry my shooting sticks.

+/- 14X & +/- 44MM scope

Why does it not surprise me that you picked the .270, LOL! Happy New Year pardner!!!

I love how my 270 Winchester featherweight has performed. My farthest shot to date is 400 yards plus.

With polymer tipped bullets they are flat shooting and perform better than other rounds in regards to wind drift. Which is a greater contributor to missed longer shots.

Hey TG,

I don't even own a .270..............yet ! (LOL)

I brought a 7MM RM for larger deer (Elk/Moose), use my .243 for smaller deer (pronghorn, whitetail & mulies).

Told the boyz on NAHC I saw you posting over here - all the best in 2012 for you my friend !)

I really like the idea of a 24" barrel over a 26"

I like the idea of a lightweight or middleweight/sporter vs. heavyweight.

If I went for mulies today, I might just bring my .243win ultra light, I actually have a 270win semi auto, but just not crazy about how heavy it is and that it's a semi auto.

have a .300win.mag. I thought about rebarreling to anything from a .257wby, 270wby, 7mm STW

could even pick up an entirely new rifle etc..

I love the idea of a fast flat shooting round, but would like something lightweight without a lot of kick, short action are nice too, maybe a 270wsm? or even 300wsm but who knows??

This is a toss up .270 or a 7mm-08

Kinda partial to my Sako in .300 H&H seems to work very well in the sagebrush!!!
