Elk Silhouette
Wanted to make an Elk silhouette out of a 4x8 sheet of paneling. I was wondering what the dimensions might be? I know a deer is roughly 16 inches through the middle, but what' s an elk? How about the distance from his chest to his rump? Thought maybe it would help my 13 year old son prepare for next months muzzleloader season in CO. I don' t want him sitting there marveling over it when he first sees one. I wnat him as prepared as possible and thought maybe this would do the trick. Thanks for any info.

Hale,
noway, is right on, however I would hate to carry that sheet of plywood out in the woods, and make sure your safe getting it into the field, Montana Decoy has some nice elk decoys that are easy to carry and work well, we tested one for our show, a little pricey, but works well! Great idea making one, good luck.

I wouldn' t want to carry that thing out in the field either. Not to mention yu just might get shot while carrying it.
Here is a link to Renzo decoys that I just found on another site. They seem to look just as good as Montana decoys but cost quite a bit less.

RE: Elk Silhouette
If I read Hale87' s post correctly, then he is NOT proposing carrying his plywood elk into the elk woods; rather he wants his son to be thinking in elk size terms and expectations NOT in deer size terms and expectations.
This addresses one issue that many deer hunters hoping to be successful elk hunters fail to take into account -- elk are NOT just large deer -- on several counts.
Good simulation, if you are using it as a target, then make sure he shoots it where it counts WITHOUT a bullseye marking the spot.
Good Planning,
EKM

RE: Elk Silhouette
Ater rereading the original post I see that he wasn' t looking for a decoy. Sorry about that.
This is from the RMEF. I would also guess that their chest is about 24" - 28" in depth. A little smaller for a cow. That' s just a guess since I have never atually measured one. Looking at the elk in my signature you could get a pretty close estemate going from the info from the RMEF. These elk are every bit of 700 pounds.
Cow 500 pounds (225 kg)
4-1/2 feet (1.3 m) at the shoulder
6-1/2 feet (2 m) from nose to tail
Bull 700 pounds (315 kg)
5 feet (1.5 m) at the shoulder
8 feet (2.4 m) from nose to tail

RE: Elk Silhouette
Bigbulls you were right. I want to use it for practice before we leave the great state of PA. We' ll set up a course out in the woods with it and a whitetail. I just think it' s a bad idea to shoot at a target the entire time without actually seeing the size of one of these things. Preparation is half the fun! Thanks for your help.
