Greatest big game animal
 

Im from sweden and i was curios about which animal that was the most greatest big game animal in the us. In sweden its Moose and Red deer but also an big wild boar is also a great thing.

Well, I' m sure " greatest" will draw lots of opinions, but I think it' s safe to say that whitetail deer are at least the most popular.

After doing a ton of scouting over the last month, I will say without question its elk in my opinion. They are just so big and strong.

If I was told I had a couple of months to live, I' d go for Rusa deer, Bongo, or one of the Ibex.

In my opinion the greatest game animal would be big mature Mule Deer. No amount of money and time spent hunting one will guarantee that a hunter will take an animal that size. I have a really good one at home that I accidentally ran into Elk hunting but I long to set my sights on a really tremendous one . I have run into some absolute monsters with no tag in my pocket or already filled out on a smaller buck or being a 1/2 mile away with a bow in my hand and night fall approaching...guess I have reason to be thankful even having gazed at such magnificent creatures and taken one of them .

I would have to say the mighty wapiti.
I have already taken a great mule deer(189 3/8 BC)no need to take another.
(not saying if the chance arose to do it again I would pass him up);)

I would like to get the chance to hunt the great bears,but need the funding first.

Gotish,

Since the USA includes Alaska, then IMHO:

Polar Bear (since they do not fear man and are at the top of " their" food chain)
Brown Bear (since they are massive and will hunt back)
Moose (because they are so large)
Wapiti (also known as " elk" in the USA)

In that order -- I don' t personally consider deer of any sort to be true BIG game.

The whitetail is certainly the most popular but I believe the greatest to be the bighorn.Although tags are available over the counter in alberta the success rate runs at around 4%.They live in remote country and even when found can be difficult to stalk within shooting range.To be consistantly successful on bighorn you must be a more dedicated hunter than for most other species.

The most fun I have had on a hunt was on a mountain goat hunt, but huntin those swamp camel' s, (Rosevelt elk) would have to be a close second.:)

For me it would have to be ELK! Only those who have had a big bull only 20 yards away screaming his guts out, would understand. These are some awesome creatures! I guess it comes down to everyones opinnion, but I would bet if everyone had the chance to be close to a screaming bull elk, opinnions would change in a hurry!!!!

The white deer.Who said they are not big game,my permit says big game on it every year.They may not be the biggest in stature,but in smarts(big bucks) and challenge to hunt their big to me;)

Gotish, for one thing its U.S. or USA, never us, but being a swed I' ll cut ya some slack, but if you ask a dozen different hunters here in the good ole USA, your going to get all kinds of answers depending on ones likeing no doubt, we all have our own goals in persueing our own big game, my own personal challenge would be a nice bull moose with a bow, but every year I get rejected since its on a quota system. My next choice is persueing elk dureing the peak of the rut, and then after that, maybe a trophy whitetail. ;) Good luck, Bobby

Gotish, I am supposed to go over to your neck of the woods to chase some moose in the next couple years with some relatives, maybe you can cover my spot in elk camp here while I' m gone.:D Something about hunting moose with dogs just seems too wierd.

I' ll go with skeeter and say that I really can' t choose a favorite. For me, I love them all as every hunt has been an experience of the senses and the memories live on. I am looking forward to hunting mule deer for the first time this fall (Montana) and am solely focused right now on working out, gathering gear, and doing everything in my power to make the trip good for my brother and for myself. I' ve hunted elk 4 times and the experience of renting the horses, packing the gear in, and the sweat and hard work that went into it were all worth the chance to sneak thru the dark timber and hear a bull bugle below me. Moose were fun to hunt as are whitetails and any other that I' ll go on in the future. I' d love to try Bighorn sheep as that would be a challenge too. The greatest...To me there is alot more involved in the equation than just the animal. There are hunting partners, the land, the experience, etc.

I' d have to say elk. The calling and calling back adds that extra dimension you really don' t find in any other hunt. You can be so aggressive and active compared to other hunts because of the calling. Bear hunting is exciting but its sitting over bait or out chasing them but you don' t know they' re there until you see em. With elk you can hear calling usually before you see them and its really exciting trying to outsmart them. If you keep score the elk almost always win but you only need one in close and its a real thrill to have one blow your hat off with a bugle at 20 yds.

I think the most impressive is the Elk, the most popular is whitetail, the most physically challenging is big horn sheep and mountain goats, the most dangerous is Great Bears (grissly, Alaskan brown bear, polar bear). Just my 2 cents worth.

I would have to agree with the mule deer. They are just so hard to come by a true monster anymore. I absolutely love elk hunting though.

I think that elk would probably be the most popular US trophy. There are other animals that are harder to hunt (due to terrain or population numbers), but I think most people come to the US to hunt trophy elk.


For me, I don't know. Let me get one of everything then I'll tell you what is the best game animals.
