Wolf Tags.

Wolf tags went on sale here in Idaho thursday, I got mine!!! They are only $11.50. Not bad, a dang turkey tag here goes for $19.75, I know which I would rather shoot.

salukipv1 05-07-2011 09:32 PM

non-resident fees??

may have to swing through ID...

fritz1 05-08-2011 04:05 AM

A Non-Resident tag is $186.

Muley Hunter 05-08-2011 06:28 AM

$186 for a predator tag? They should pay us to clean up their mess.

Thats not a bad price. We're still waiting for our F&G to finalize the quota numbers for our wolf hunt. When they do, i too will be hunting a wolf this fall, as for turkey tag, our's is just $6.50, but would still rather buy the wolf tag!!! Good luck to you this fall!

South33 05-08-2011 02:22 PM

Same here scottb3472; waiting for them to give the ok & I will be one of the first in line to get the wolf tag here in MT. I just seen a monster black wolf yesterday driving to work; its time for him to pay... lol

Good Luck to everyone!

MT and ID would be better served by lowering their non-resident wolf tag fee and then charging a trophy fee of say $150 to successful non-resident hunters. Not many people will pay that kind of money for what amounts to a long shot incidental. They'd be better off getting more people licensed to take them and then charge them after they bag one. Most folks would fork over the coin after they had one in the bag. Alaska has dropped the non-resident wolf tag fee in a lot of areas to encourage non-resident hunters to take wolves while they're hunting other species. Wolves are tough to target specifically and most are taken incidentally to something else just on a dumb luck basis.

salukipv1 05-08-2011 08:10 PM

when does the season open?

chep 05-08-2011 09:27 PM

Glad to hear the wolves are going to get back on the hunted list.

salukipv1 05-08-2011 11:02 PM

certainly a lower tag fee would increase non-res tag sales and overall revenue, at $35 etc....every non-res elk/deer hunter would buy a tag just to have one just in case.

at $186/300+ you almost have to make it a special trip/hunt to justify that. ID requires a non-res hunting license, so essentially the same price as MT's tag I believe around $300 to hunt a wolf in ID/MT as a non-res.

They said the season is going to be as early as September and they are only going to have a quota of about 60 or so, it hasnt been decided yet. When the quota is filled the season is over.

60? Montana's tentative quota is 220 and I had heard Idaho's was going to be more than that. I even reard that Idaho may hire a helicopter to take out a bunch in the Lolo area before the snow melts this spring.

Save Western Wildlife Wolf Howlers------I bought one and the first evening we tried it out we had 2 wolves answer us within 500 yards, cool as hell. Not to hard to learn, blow softly and it sounds like a pup or a female wolf.

Your right it is 220, I just checked, Idaho has the same quota as Montana. I think there is a quota of 60 in the unit I live in. I still havnt heard anything about them hireing helecopters for the Lolo unit though, that is the unit it right next to where I live, we hunt the Lolo creek area all the time, I know there is a lot of wolves in that unit.

Kill em all as far as I'm concerned. Went on a guided hunt with Yellowstone Outfitters in Wyoming in 2001 on the Thorofare River and upper Yellowstone River. Was awesome then. The group I went hunting with had a 10 of 11 elk harvest. My buddies friends went with them in 2009 and only had a 1 out of 10 elk harvest. Don't even know if there in business any more with the massive elk, deer, and moose kill off from the wonderful anti-hunting groups beloved mascot.

Zim 05-10-2011 05:40 AM

For $340 I will pass. Would have been nice as an $11 varmit bonus. I'll be right on the border moose hunting in Wyoming anyway. Good luck to residents though. Thin out those packs!

A Bugling Bull Elk bugle and a Hoochie Mama cow call works pretty good also. Two years ago during the archery elk season, my brother and I were bugleing and using the cow call, before long we had wolves all arround us fireing up.

Hell yeah!!!! They need to!!! There is alot of wolves in that area.

moremules 05-11-2011 06:59 AM

From Steve Alder--As of May 4th, IDFG had full authority to begin removing wolves to save our elk and deer herds. We just spoke with Jim Unsworth and he indicated the dept. doesn’t have helicopters and staff ready to go and this is the reason they are using for not being in the air. Please contact your IDFG commissioners and encourage them to follow-through with their promises of exercising direct wolf control measure as soon as they had the green light.

moremules 05-13-2011 03:31 PM

From Steve Alder>IDFG contracted the wolf control to the USDA>IDFG is in the air! Just got the following email: In my opinion, it will be almost impossible until next winter to be effective because the wolves are down out of the snow with the elk.

I just got word they were able to fly the last couple of days---------do not have a count-------however it is tough, as we predicted it is not like the open country down south. The elk are following green up with wolves right behind so not able to chase in open on snow-----very expensive and dangerous flying. I understand a news release with more details is planned for later today.

Muley Hunter 05-13-2011 04:48 PM

I wish all you wolf hunters the best.

Save the Elk.

salukipv1 05-13-2011 05:31 PM

PS- I remember thinking $300 for a wolf tag was way too expensive in 2009, then there was no season in 2010 and remember thinking, guys who bought a tag and hunted and were successful in 2009 were really smart.

I assume the success rate isn't that high, even amongst serious wolf hunters, vs. guys who just bought a wolf tag to have/frame, or just in case they saw one.

fritz1 05-13-2011 05:58 PM

I just heard today that the fish & game has killed 5 wolves out of the helicopter in the Lolo unit so far. I hope all 5 were pregnant females!

We can only hope.

Any word on if or when MT will offer tags? I have seen three wolves in the past two weeks & have heard many more. I just got back from a snow shoeing trip to Smith Mtn. (MT/ID border) & we found 4 dead moose; all were killed by wolves & only one was ate on... so messed up.

fritz1 05-13-2011 06:58 PM

Montana is supposed to be offering tags, I am not sure when but the quota is supposed to be the same as here in Idaho, 220, in my opinion thats not nearly enough.

Not even close to enough! The "estimated" wolf population that F&G posts every year is so inaccurate it isn't even funny...

Yeah the F&G say we have a estimated 750-1000, that is grossly underestimated. The removal of only 220 isnt going to do crap to help our wolf situation here. Out of 1000 wolves, how many of those are females and out of those female wolves how many cubs are they going to have? Even though we are going to get to hunt them this year, we will have more wolves here next year than we do now! All I have to say is you only have to tag the one that you keep! SSS!

BikerRN 05-14-2011 07:00 AM

Being that I look at things from a more agrarian perspective, the only good wolf is a dead wolf in the lower 48.

jdhogg 05-14-2011 07:20 AM

put em on the same list as coyotes,it would be easier and get rid of them quick
