Wow, do I feel left out here. My longest shot was 84 yards. I hunt the mountains and woods of SW Virginia so shots are close or not at all. There are fields around, but the majority of my hunting is in the woods. I would like to get shots at long range, but I guess it is nice to be up close to them instead.

Longest shot was a ranged 227 yd off hand shot at a woodland caribou. Dropped like a stone after taking the 30-06 180 gr in the boiler. Other than that the longest was a max of 125 yds at deer and elk. Most of my kills were at about 75 yds. As far as 1000 yd shots I just can't imagine that. In all honesty in all the places I ever hunted there wouldn't be any occasion where a game animal was that far and still in view.

I hunt the open prairie of eastern CO. Sometimes you just can't get closer. If all you have to hide behind is 3 inch tall winter wheat you better be ready to shoot long.
507 yds. buck antelope and a few that were out there almost as far.

Well short story, not really proud of but turned out ok. Killed an elk over 400 yards with 30-06. Had practiced extensively at range at 275 yards. and was confident at this range. I ranged an elk at 287 yards and got a good sitting rest. shot and missed, shot again, he started moving, shot again and he went down. I tried ranging again because i couldn't believe i missed. The 400 yardage pro wouldn't range him, but a tree between us and close to line of sight ranged at 287. OOPS I guess I ranged the tree accidently. I would never have taken the shot had I known he was that far because I had not practiced at that distance. Fortunately for the elk and me I didn't just injure him. I suggest just be real sure of the conditions and situation when firing that far or any shot for that matter.

Here in the high desert, shrub steppe if you aren't ready to make a long shot 300yds or more then ya better stay home!! sure I've gotten game closer, the elk in my avatar was shot at about 75 yds....but we watched him come in from over 2000yds walked right to us!!! In some places the is no cover over about 1ft tall!!!!!

A pronghorn at 240 yards was the longest. Excepting this, a deer at 200 yards; two deer at 140 yards (two different years, shooting from the same hidy-hole at deer on nearly identical trails); three deer at between 40 yards and 15 yards. An elk at 70 yards.

Get on a good prairie dog town and you can take shots as far as you wish, I've made a few over 500 yards.....and they are a game animal, close enough any ways!!
