Default Wolves

Wolves are a problem in this state, much more than The government agencies involved are willing to admit. I have watched this issue with interest since wolves were introduced to Yellowstone. Things have progressed much as I have expected. Wolves are now regularly sighted 50 or so Miles west of Casper. This is about 300 miles from Yellowstone. Several of the local ranchers have already had livestoct losses from these wolves. In a couple of years there will be a Family pack established in the area. A couple of years past that lone wolfs will be expanding their range and started other Family packs. The wolf population will soon explode exponentially, if management is not implemented to control the numbers.

Hunter2012---You are definitely correct in that assessment. I hunt a ways nw of Casper up in the BigHorns and a pack came in up there two years ago and killed over 100sheep and calves on the ranches next to where I hunt. The Father of the Federal guy that was assigned to the case told me his son ended up getting 3 of the 8 they think was in the pack and he had to do that by air because trapping didn't get any. The alpha male he shot had a collar that was put on up north of Gardner, MT!!! The Feds are keeping that incident very quiet and it never even made the local papers, but I know some are still in our area because we found a big track in the mud last September while helping the neighboring rancher where the sheep were killed fix his fence.

No question wolves are a problem. The 2922 wolves in Sask are estimated in killing 43,800-58,500( tens of thousands) deer a year.
According to an editorial by Gary Donald in his Big Buck Magazine.
I didn't realize they where responsible for killing so many myself.
Changed my view somewhat. But this wolf control had to work on both sides of the boarders. It has to. Sask is the only Western Province that doesn't have a wolf control program. But what good is a Wolf control program in Alta, British Columbia, if the southern States don't have one.Add that to the CWD kill off zones and the LEH that take in these same zones afterward, and there is nothing left in alot of Sask management units.I'm sure the actions we take in Canada directly affects Yellowstone as well.Cause animals share no boarders Canada and U.S. hunters have to come together as one, I know there is International Conservation Organizations that represent this, however I have gone to meatings and all we seem to be concerned about is what is happening to ourselves in one district, instead of reaching out wider and farther and making this one same huge issue that is
happening everywhere and affecting everything and everyone.
The only way things will happen is if we all get together on both sides of the boarder country wide and get this issue addressed. The sooner it can be done, the sooner pressure will be put on Gov on both sides to make it happen. Animal right activits won't stand a chance on this one. Tens of Thousands of poor innocent deer elk and moose are getting eaten by 2900 wolves in one Province alone.
It will work, if we do it right.

Who's afraid of the big bad wolf? By Angie Nash
Mar. 15 2011, 7:45 PM

I’m not Little Red Riding Hood and I haven’t seen Three Little Pigs in quite some time. The Canadian Grey Wolf has come to NE Oregon.

We have a pack of 16 wolves hanging out with our cattle for 9 months out of the year. This is no fairy tale. I heard about Montana, Wyoming and Idaho and just couldn’t believe it was real. We lost 20 calves in 09, which for us equals $24,000. We were the only ones in our area to lose cattle that year. We talked about it and since we lease 130,000 acres of USFS ground we are pretty remote. No one wanted to believe it until the wolves came to town.

We have since learned that the wolves take their pups to what is called a rendezvous site where they teach the pups to hunt. This happened to be a place where we had 200 pair (cow + calf). We didn’t find out about this until last summer when a wolf specialist came to the county and had a talk with us on wolf behavior. My husband often rides 15 miles a day and was woofed at by these wolves. His border collies that are usually quite a distance in front of him were right under his horse, they knew. The state agency in charge of the wolves knew exactly what was going on and failed to contact us.

We have only found one dead calf. All that was left was a head and ribcage and the carcass was still warm. We found this calf because an eagle had landed on it. The total loss in our county to date is at least 75. The stress and worry over our animals cannot be compensated.

We hear a lot about the “Endangered Species Act” and these wolves are protected like the eagles. They are not endangered and are not the wolf species that once lived here. We live in the land of the Nez Perce and their history talks a lot about a Red Wolf, which is 60-80 pounds, not 100-140 pounds. The Canadian Grey Wolf is known as an Apex Predator, a predator with no predators of their own, thus residing at the top of the food chain. The paw print of a Canadian Grey Wolf is as large as a man’s hand.

A month ago, seven of these wolves came to a ranch about five miles from town. They took down two mama cows and ate their calves out of them-one had twins. The wolf does not kill before it starts eating. The crime scene was very gruesome. Nothing was done about this. So strange. The wolf is a wild dog, not a god.

A yearling female wolf was killed by one of the state agencies two weeks ago due to over drugging her and extreme stress. No one lost his or her job, no federal charges were made, just oops, we don’t know what happened.

Wolf fence is being installed now around calving pastures. This should hold them until they figure out how to jump. The time and money that is being put into these animals is criminal in itself.

All this being said the wolf is an amazing creature. The wolf is extremely intelligent, born to hunt, eat, and repeat. We feel angry and sad that we are put in the position of animosity against them. We don’t hate the wolf but know that it is being used as a tool to remove cattle from public land. No one in this scenario is happy, not the environmentalists, not the ranchers, not the tourists that love our beautiful mountain valley. It’s a serious situation that could definitely end many ranches in our community.

The Montana Governor, Brian Schweitzer, has written the U.S. Department of the Interior, Ken Salazar, and told him that he is in fact taking his state back. I do not know this man but I definitely want to shake his hand.

This is a strange and tragic situation for Montana, Wyoming, Idaho and now NE Oregon. Why is one animal’s life more important than another? I need to say it again, “The wolf is a wild dog, not a god." http://workingranchtv.com/blog/324

All Hands on Deck !!!!!!!

We need everyone to be at the Idaho State Capitol in Boise April 6th at 11:00 am (pre-meeting) to support the Wolf Disaster Declaration. Meet on the steps of the Capitol. We also need everyone to call the Governors office ( 208-334-2100) and tell him you support the Canadian Wolf Disaster Declaration!!!!!!!!!! And that Idahoan's have had enough of this wolf disaster that has plagued Idaho. This is the most important event you can get involved in, the fight to protect Idaho's Wildlife. Be there......................... Also please read the information provided below. ( Please Forward this e-mail)

Kelton Larsen

Sharon (and others who may be reading this)

However much we may agree with the particular proposed draft you published, it was never introduced in the Idaho Legislature and will not be put to a vote next week. What will be put to a vote in the Idaho House on Monday or Tuesday (April 4th or 5th), and in the Idaho Senate on Wednesday April 6th at 1:30 P.M., is an RS that I have read and which was approved for printing but for which the bill number has not yet been posted. Until it is, I can not legally reproduce it. But I can say it declares an emergency and, if passed by both House and signed by the Governor it can and will restore control at the local level and allow removal of wolves.

A sufficient number of legislative supporters have already been collected in the House but up to several thousand citizen supporters are needed to show up at the Capitol in Boise on Wednesday April 6th by about 1:00 P.M. If you are one of the tens of thousands of ranchers, outfitters, hunters, business owners and their employees and rural dwellers who are being adversely impacted by wolves and you don't show up on Wednesday - with everyone else you can muster - you have only yourself to blame.

Your presence in sufficient numbers will assure passage of this legislation in the Senate and acceptance by the Governor. Regardless of all the complaining and posturing, this is the only chance we have had to show our support for Idaho's sovereignty and for Constitutional control of our destiny. Those who find some excuse for not attending - and bringing everyone else who shares their concerns - may be destroying our sole opportunity to take back control of our destiny from the feds and their bed-partners who profit from an agenda that is slowly destroying the rest of us.

I urge you to forward this email to the people on your lists who share these same concerns. People in other states with similar problems will benefit from the action this will cause the feds to take and should attend if at all possible.

I'll provide the rest of the information to everyone on this list before Wednesday.

Sincerely,

George Dovel
