That Chuck Adams guy arrowed two 400+ out of Gardiner area in Montana. I thought one was a P&Y record at one time. There are 400 class bulls running around the Gallitian national forest.

I personally know the guy with the state of Montana Pope & Young record Nontypical elk. 409" on the dot. Taken in Lincoln County in 1996.

Here's the 400" or better elk killed since 2000 that people have taken the time to actually submit to the state of Montana that they have posted on their website. There were several others that were high 390's.

Probably not the quailty of the premier Utah LE units, but several of those bulls were taken in general hunt areas based on the county listed. People always talk about the Missouri Breaks area that is a LE area in Montana, but only one of the 400"+ bulls were from that area.

P.S. - I would guess that 2000 and 2003 were pretty good years for moisture but I haven't gone back and checked. They've had some really good moisture years the last couple years, wonder if there are some dandy's that are about to get posted up.

Not my point. Utah hypes there LE units to the hilt, 400 this 400 that, people spend tens of thousands on auctions and raffles. I just want to know how many percentage wise of the LE tags are wrapped around a 350 bull or better. I bet its less than 25%.

If you read the internet and magazines, all you need to do is just get one and you will bag a giant. I am thinking a large amount of these LE tagholders go home disappointed.

And yes, MT produces several 400 bulls a year on general tags, and others on some of the premium draws. I know of two this year that very few people will ever know about. And if you want to go with 400 inch bulls on LE permits, I bet its less than 5%. BFD, I would rather hunt every year and have a legit shot at a 350 or better bull, and in MT, you got it. Heck, my buddy just got ANOTHER 350 bull this year, pubic land, OTC tag, blah blah blah.

And 180k is probably stretching it by about 50,000 elk too.

actually theres 2 from the breaks on that list possible 3. garfield co, hill co., and possible fergus co. sad thing is wolves are taking a toll on the elk in the dillon, bozeman, missoula areas

Well I'd say about 37 people got lucky with a rifle in 5 year period so the chances across the board to kill a 400 class bull would be say .005 percent or something like that? If I started putting in now for a trophy draw of a lifetime I'd probably be so old by the time I drew I wouldn't even care if I shot a spike bull by then. Maybe I'll get a chance to find another nice 300 class bull in Colorado OTC and be happy I get to go hunting every year.

Given what the reintroduction of wolves has done to the elk herds in the west end of this state, you certainly will not see as many elk as we did just a few years back. That being said, MT does produce some big bulls...we just don't advertise them as much....our little secret. A 350 class bull is not uncommon up here.....
