the best one I saw was 30.06 was marginal after 250 yds!!!!!!
Obviously most here have never been in the sagebrush hunting elk!!! or mulies....... in most cases if U don't shoot 400/600yds U aint gonna get no game 30.06 with a 150 grain will still do the job at that distance, with close to 1400ftlbs of energy!!!!

sir,my 721 flat out roocks!ive hit out to 500yrds and have killed out to 400 with it.maybe you just havent found a load or cant shoot.i use mine down around burns in the high desert and never felt undergunned.i dont need the newest faastest 30cal out there,or the newest trick super rifle.i suggest you try new loads or go get 300ultra or 338.anytime ya wanna go shoot the desert just let me know.no disrespect but your very wrong:party0005:

I have to agree with you that premium bonded bullets are not needed although I also use them. They are insurance. I would not hesitate to use a 180 Ballistic Tip from an 06 on elk. The weight retention at 06 velocities is around 60% and that will penetrate just fine. I would worry more about the performance of a 150 grain BT from a 300WM than the slower 180 with less KE from an 06. JMHO

I would be careful with this ammo. A LOT of pictures to support they are pushing the limits of HOT Loads with pressure in this line of ammo. 1 in 4 with primers gone after they are shot from one guy. Definite signs of high pressure.

I agree that a 30.06 is MORE that adequate for elk out to and beyond 500yds...............or maybe better yet go and read every post and see the one I refered to!!!!!! These idiots that think a 270 or 30.06 is the bare minimum for elk have they heads so far up their rectums, they'll never get to smell fresh air!!!! Go back and read there R folks here that say U should not shoot at big at distances over a couple hundred yds!!! and I say that they must never have hunted elk or mulies inthe sagebrush, because most shots R 300/600yds.......As for hunting the desert ...thats all I hunt is high desert/schrub steppe...I have never gotten a elk in the timber!!!!!!

I heard a story of a canned hunt, where a 10 yo kid shot a bison 3 times with a .243, and the bison dropped.

I saw a canned hunt, where they were hunting with a replica buffalo rifle and it still took 3 shots from a 45/70

The first 2 elk I killed was with a 25/35...was I close?? yes ......but it killed them dead!!!!! I think that hunting big game those first few years with that rifle taught me alot about how and where to shoot a big animal!!! when to shoot or not shoot!!!!

Thanks for all the advice, I now have a couple of 180 and 165 to try out tomorrow so will decide after seeing what shoots best.

Exactly what I was going to suggest!

So far all the random people I ask in person say, go with the 180, yet here I'm getting a lot saying go for the 165.

Here are 2 rounds I've been looking at and the 165 appears to have more velocity and energy. Are people just letting their heart rule their minds, assuming bigger is better, or am I missing something?

Just to remind you this is for mule deer and elk in Colorado.


SST and GMX are similar in the ballistics chart but no GMX at local stores.
