Where are you hunting?

Around here (Central Utah) the elk will be out of velvet except a few odd balls and small bulls. The muleys will be in the process of shedding the velvet in early September but you would have a good chance of running into some still in full velvet.

With some few exceptions, where I hunt in Western Wyoming, most of the mule deer will be in velvet. Most of the elk not. By mid September, most all of the mule deer not.

There are exceptions to that but I agree with them. Most elk will be out and most deer in or just starting. I have seen some bigger deer in velvet later in the year.

As of Sept 8 in Colorado, some of the bulls were in velvet and some out.
