I agree with RBH's post. 130 Gr NBT are Deer bullets, not Elk bullets.

You don't need 1" groups at 100 yards to kill an elk, 1.5 or so does fine.

I would take a 1 & 1/2 or even 2 inch NP group to a 1/2 inch NBT group any day for elk.

Better to hit with a .270 than to miss with a Magnum. I also think 500 yards is too far to shoot elk.

Will take that advice and go 150 np in 270 and 180np in 06. Since we'll have 2 rifle scabbords. Thx again

Just don't mix up your shells. That can ruin your day quickly. An 06 and a 270 casing are pretty close. I really wouldn't go w/ the 180 on an 06. If you were looking for better long range performance, I would go w/ the 165 grain. I would discourage you from taking 2 rifles though because the cartridges are so similar and that could really ruin your day. I live in Montana, and have killed multiple elk with a .270. I have also used a 30-06, and .300 wby and have friends and siblings that have killed them with .243 winchesters and .25-06 remingtons. I even have a friend that killed a nice 6 point bull w/ a .223 ruger ranch rifle (though I wouldn't recommend it). The biggest thing is when you shoot and hit an elk, stay on it. They don't die instantly like deer unless you shoot them in the head. Even the elk I shot w/ the 300 wby took time to die and it was around 100 yards.

Just my $ .02

Point taken. There are two hunters w tags for 2 elk and a mulie. Maybe that green tip 165 NBT will be just the difference to keep them straight. Thanks

I have seen this thread started many times here "Is a 270 big enough". And one man hit it on the head here is his words.

by RedRiver:
IMHO....I would recommend a sharp stick! Here is my logic.....
More game has been killed with it than any other.
It doesn't weigh very much.
It is readily available.
Very little recoil. (Provided you throw it. If you stab him with it you could get a little reverb)
As long as you limit yourself to the range you are comfortable with(i.e. don't try to stab him from a range longer than your stick)and use proper point placement, you will be satisfied with the results!!!
Just remember to get comfortable with your stick and practice sufficiently to acquire the proper confidence.

As an added bonus, when you realize that you have spent all this money, time and effort on what could have been an outstanding hunt, perhaps even the hunt of a lifetime, but yet had to pass up your shot due to the fact that you un-necessarily handicapped yourself by trying to use the least amount of force possible............
you can use your stick to actually do a field study as to whether that realization at that particular point in time is any more painful than a sharp stick in the eye!!!

Great idea...Unfortionately to hunt with a sharp stick is illegal in my neck of the woods. So is clubbing fish.I can spear them but can't club them.I donno.
Good thought though.
