Elk Rifle Advice
 

Finally have an elk hunt lined up.

My question is - is a 300 Win. Mag. enough gun? I have a semi-custom Rem 700 that is drop dead accurate with 200 gr. Partitions. Zeiss VMV, 4x12-50m mm scope. I have used it only on mule deer, and only twice.

I also have a 308 Win. Styer Mountain that is my number one choice for all of my white tail and hog hunting. It too is extremely accurate with my hand loaded 165 gr. Gamekings or Partitions. Swarovski Hibacht , 3-10x50 mm.

Just not sure which to take.

If I need something heavier hitting, I can do that. Just looking for advice from you that have hunted elk.

I would take the 300 WM. Just make sure you are confident with it. If you aren't confident with the .300, the .308 will do fine.

Either one can do the job, but if it were me, I'd take the .300 Win Mag.

haha, is your 300 win mag enough gun? it's the ideal elk cartridge...

I don't get it though, you're asking if a 300WM is enough gun? or you have a .308? the mag is way more gun than the 308...

Your 300-win mag with 200-grain Nosler Partitions is a Great choice for your elk hunt.

I agree with the others in using the 300 WM as it will be perfect for elk. I have quite a few friends in Colorado that use the .270 Win and haven't lost an animal or had to track one very far.

I would take which ever one is lighter. It's more like elk HIKING than elk Hunting. Also which one has more dings & nicks in the stock? You will probably get some more on the elk hike. HorseBack hunt? Which one fits a scabbard? CB

I've shot elk at nearly 700 yards with a 300WM. Unless you plan on shooting further, yes, it's plenty of gun. 200gr is the perfect bullet weight.

I like my 300 win mag. But I use 165 gr boattails. Would say most loads the 300 win mag uses would be plenty of punching power.
