I have hunted elk for 28-years, my go-to elk rifle is my 340-Weatherby.

Good luck hunting,

WK

Got 2 in the freezer. Best form of venison IMO. More like beef than deer or moose.

For an elk gun I would say 300 win mag or 300 WSM are all around winners. Most other popular mid sized calibers are more than adequate.
.340 Wby. Mag. Good luck.
I have read that is the perfect elk caliber.

I use the same recipe as Gamblinman

The 7mm RM will get him on the ground - I bring the .338 WM when I know there is bear to contend with.

It's all about shot placement, not about caliber. Choose which gun you like, Use a good quality bullet and have fun. I've shot many elk that dropped with one shot from a 120g 25-06, I watched a bull take five 180g 30-06 bullets. Recent years I've been using a 270WSM shooting 140g TSX. And they have worked great.

.30-06

I agree, but, things don't always go as planned, and that extra energy from the larger caliber can make or break you're hunt.
