Minimum North American Rifle Battery
 

If you could choose 4 CARTRIDGES to hunt North American game from Moose to praire dogs, what would you choose, If you want to include a fifth rifle for brown bear then do so. Feel free to list a certain rifle MFG and model if you want.:)

Well I have hunted with one rifle for all NA Big Game, living in Montana I have hunted Elk, Moose, Deer, Black Bear, Yotes, PDogs, hell everything Montana has except Mount Goat. Alaskan Brownies and Bous as well with the same gun.

ruger 10/22-short range varmints
rem 40xbks in 6mm rem for long range varmints
custom 700 built by pgw(prairie gun works) in 7mmstw-deer,sheep,pronghorn etc
custom 700 built by pgw in 300 ultra-moose,elk,bear etc.
I already have all four and if I was to change it would be to substitute pgw' s own titanium action in the stw and ultramag in order to make the guns a little lighter.

Hmmm...

1) Ruger 10/22 or Browning Semi Auto .22 for short/medium range varmints
2) .243 Win M70 Short Carbine for long range varmints/antelope/deer hunting
3) .30-06 Springfield in Browning SS Stalker A-Bolt II for deer to moose
4) .45-70 Govt. in Marlin 1895 CB lever action for deer to polar bear - my big medicine with custom loads.

I have 1 to 3 already and am working on #4;)

He said a fifth for big bears but I would take a good .50 cal. inline muzzleloader like the T/C Encore that I have. (not for big bear but for the additional hunting fun it provides me)

.25/06Rem-----------coyotes, long range small " big game" deer, antelope
.308Win---------------all N.A. big game except dangerous game
.338Win Mag----------all NA big game including dangerous game
.358 Norma Mag ------If I could find one, I would have it for my dangerous game rifle.

I see some have included .22LR, it' s not a centerfire, but everyone should have one. Besides most of us want more than four rifles.

These are the rifles i use now:
Coyote and deer savage 99a in 250-3000 with a leupold 2x-7x var x II and I shoot 100 gr winchester silvertip factory loads or hornady 117 gr round nose handloads.
Deer and elk savage 99 DL in 284 winchester with a leupold 3x-9x var x II.
I handload 139 gr sp and 154 gr round nose for my 284.
Moose,elk,bear and deer, remington 700 classic in 350 remington magnum with a leupold 2x-7x var x II.I handload hornady 200gr round nose and nosler 225 gr partitions.

Man, is this a tough one. Limit me to four guns? Not possible (LOL). Well, here goes:
.22 bolt action for small stuff to groundhogs
.243 or .257 for deer, longrange varmints, etc.
.300 Weatherby for big and ugly stuff, like bears, moose, elk, etc.
12 gauge shotgun for birds, deer in areas where rifles are prohibited.
