not exactly big game but a ruger or marlin 22 should do the job even on the biggest of squirrels.

Hmmm, for a kid his age I would say either a .410 shotgun or a .22 Try taking him out in the early morning and evening. Squirrels seem to move around mostly when it is cool. You could buy him a squirrel call, they get suprising results.

I'm with Deer Slayer, all my kids started on squirrels with a 20ga 870 youth shotgun. It doesn't seem to matter what time of day it is in the fall, at least not to my kids. They are pretty persistant though.

I'm a 410 nut...I have several and shoot them almost daily. A 410 can be very frustrating for a kid. Their pattern is 1/3 that of a 20ga at just 25 yards. If the kid can take the recoil...get him a 20 guage.

I like starting kids with a scattergun. After they've downed several squirrels...then introduce the 22.

i would start him on a 20ga or a .22 the best time to hunt is in the fall in the morning or evening it doesnt matter.

my dad started me off with a 410 bolt action,when I could hit with that he gave me a 22.
that will make a better shot.the 410 has a tighter pattern,give him 10 shells and look fo 6 to 10 animals.that gives the kid a target to shoot for.

You might think about a Savage combination gun. I'm not sure, but I think the model # is 24. It has 20 gauge barrel on bottom and you can get a .22lr or a .22 Magnum on top.

Or you could get one of the NEF interchangeable barrel sets.

Or a T/C Contender or Encore, so he can later upgrade to big game with the same gun.
