Antelope

When you hunt antelope would you use a deer caliber like a 30-06, 25-06, or lighter like 243.

RE: Antelope

Had used a .270win for years for antelope, just picked up a .243win as my specialized antelope setup, this will be my first year trying it out. Number of friends have always used .243win. with no problems ever.

So of your 3 choices certainly the .25-06 or .243 would be my choice, and currently leaning towards the .243 as my pick.

I have used the 30-06, and the .243....I think I like the .243 better. It is a personal preference though.

The 243 will do a fine job with a great trajectory to boot. I'm not a fan of using ridiculously oversized cartridges on an animal. I saw a whitetail shot at 200 yards with my loaned-out 300WM last year, as well as the muley I shot at over 400 yards, and the amount of damage was ridiculous. It's a great elk gun which is what I bought it for, but no need for a 30 cal on dinky little antelope.

about any legal caliber should work. have harvested lots with a 6mm.

I would think a .243 Win would be a great Pronghorn rifle. I am planning on hunting them this fall with a .257 Wby Mag that I bought and setup mainly for hunting Pronghorns. I have only killed one Pronghorn previously and I shot him with a 7mm Rem Mag. They are relatively small as Big Game animals go and aren't heavily built, so they certainly do not require big bullets or magum power. The only hesitancy I have with the smaller cartridges is their ability to handle the wind that always seems to be howling and gusting in the wide open plains and sagebrush flats where Pronghorns are found.

I thing the good Lord created the 25-06 and 100's specifically for speed goats.
