wyoming bison hunt

I am #19 on the Wyoming Bull Bisonlist for 2009. I was wondering if anybody had information on these hunts?

RE: wyoming bison hunt

Father was #7 non-res bull last year, and he got a tag. I believe the first 50 will get called/offered a tag. I spoke to fish n game and they said not everyone who is issued a tag will buy/take their tag, so if they offer 50 tags say maybe only 20 will use them.

Give jackson,wy fish n game a call though and they'll be able to give you a pretty certain idea, but I think you'll be hunting a bison if you choose to.

Thanks. Did you hunt w/ your dad last year? Do you have any specifics on the hunt?

I had this tag in 2007. You will get one with that number.
The hunt itself is usually pretty simple, but a warm fall like last year will keep most of them in the Park where you can't hunt.
Not sure where you are from, but be prepared to get a bunch of meat out quickly. The carcass weight of mine without the head and hide was 800 pounds. It filled the back of my shortbed Ford.
I used a 300WM, but any good rifle at least 30-06 or more will do the job.

I drew a cow tag for 2009 i am planning on going and purchasing my license within the next couple of weeks. My 8 yr old daughter is more excited to go than i am. My dates for the elk refuge are nov 3 -20th. My question is when i go to get my license i was planning on taking a ride to look around and see where i could go hunt that is not on the refuge. Does anyone have any places they would be telling me to go look around or any suggestions.

thank you

chris

The people at the G&F will be more than helpful to tell you where to find them. They really want to reduce the numbers.
The cow are actually harder to find than the bulls.

Has anyone heard of any harvests yet? I did hear about the guide who ended up in the hospital.

hey johsides did she manage to get a cow or a bull. i think i am going to skip the cow elk hunting for a while and try to go look around next weekend

chriswy1 11-23-2009 12:20 PM

was up there for a few days two weeks ago it seems to me that the bison do know where they are safe i did see some tracks in the forest but at daylight they moved back on the park. There was one small bull within a few hundred yards of the forest but he seemed to know to just hang out where he was. I am hunting cows and i have seen as i have been told to wait for some snow so i am planning on going up when the snow starts to come in a little more. I did enjoy looking at all the nice bull elk on the forest however. talked with the game and fish on Friday they said the 500 bison that were hanging around kelly have moved 20 miles to the north and are still hanging out on the park.

chriswy1 12-07-2009 08:28 AM

was there again last week seen a few bulls close to the forest but most are with the herds on the park. The game and fish said that snow is a must and there was hardly any. i am finished looks like i will not get my cow. did see alot of elk however.

They're not on the refuge yet?

Shoot your cow!

Get out there and get it done, did you talk to fish and game? they should give you places to check out that are legal to hunt and not the park and not the refuge...

My dad got his bull early in the season, had it not been for F&G suggesting a spot to check out he probably wouldn't have got a bull at that time of year.

chriswy1 12-07-2009 11:26 AM

Everytime i have gone i have talked with the game and fish and gone to where they suggested, but they have also said that the bulls will move a little more than the cows and the cows seem to stay put in the park. The last cows killed were over thanksgiving they said possibly there are to many elk hunters on the refuge for the elk to move on there and also there is a lot of feed this year and the weather has really not been good to get them moving.

salukipv1 12-07-2009 01:47 PM

How late does the season run to?

Good luck, I think you can make it happen, I assume your a resident, so eating the tag won't be as bad as if you were a non-res ($2500) still would hate to not get a buff after finally drawing the tag.
