Favorite Russian Boar Caliber

After two seasons of deer hunting, my boy started asking about hunting Russian boars. His deer rifle is a 260 remington and since some of the boars we run into down in Tennessee can go 250-300 pounds, I told him he could get a new rifle for the trip. I think the 260 would work, but I like to see the boy' s face light up at the thought of a new gun. Well, I left the choice up to him (a big decision for a fourteen year old). I was surprised at his choice a Marlin 336 in 35 remington. He said he always like the look of a " cowboy gun." My personal favorite is my model 700 BDL in 30-06.

Just wondering what everyone else likes.

I' d go with a M44 Mosin Nagant in 7.62x54R. ;)

This gun was the Russian military rifle b/4 the AK.

It' s actually a very accurate rifle and they can be had for a little of nothing. They make great project guns. :D

The cartrige is a .308

Another M-N shooter! Cool. Broey1, the bullets might be a bit hard to find, but I' ve seen Win. ammo for in that size. If you reload, look for a .310 or even B303 bullets (.311)

I like the 45/70 with 300 grain bullets in this sort of application.

Tha 35 caliber will put any hog down out to about a hundred yards. I had one and traded it and have kicked myself ever since.

Have used mainly .44 Magnum, 240 grain bullet, on boars of the size you mention. Rossi Puma Stainless Steel, 16 inch barrel is the gun.
Has worked well for me, but the shots have all been close i.e. less than 50 yards, and mainly 10-20 yards.
I like the short gun when hunting pigs, as I usually hunt in very thick scrub, and it doesn' t get tangled up all the time when it' s slung on your back. Also it is a very light weight.
Would consider using a handgun if they were legal for hunting down here. Unfortunately they are not.
Your gun choice will depend on the type of hunting style; stalk, stand, dogs etc.
Those big boars have a very thick shoulder sheild that takes a lot of penetrating.

I would really like a Browning BLR in .358 Win for this application.

35 rem is a good caliber, but it isn' t a real flat shooter. Where we hunt boar in CA. we often have to shoot out to 2-300yds. Definitely not a job for a .35. I use my .270 or 7mm mag. I have the very gun you mentioned in .35 rem that I hunt deer in NY with. Our shots there rarely exceed 100yds.
Maybe the way to approach the hunt for his gun is from the perspective of what else you and he may hunt in the future. If you have elk in plans someday, then a good old trusty 30-06 is just the ticket. About the same recoil as the .35 but much better ballistics.

Just my .02 worth

First Russian boar I killed was with the .444 Marlin 1895 outfitter. I used handloads with the 240 gr Nosler HP bullet. I added enough powder to get 2100 fps (18.5" Barrel). Hit the boar in the lungs at 35 yards and it blew some pieces of its heart on the ground. Same load also decked a spike sika buck. Note: I am going to use 300 gr on boar for future woods hunts.
