There is some great info, just what you are after, on www.tradrag.com Go to Elk forum. Tons of info on packs, tents, gear, etc. Those guys have some great stuff on it. Goods luck

One thing you want to do is get on Colorado Division of Wildlife's website and order their "Down to the Bone" video. Especially if you are backpacking in and out, you'll want to debone that elk right away to pack it out. That video is really great at showing you how if you've never done it. The tarp they use is a wonderful idea, I carry a small one in my daypack for just that purpose.

Just do a google search for hunting checklist (add 'backpack if you are backpacking) and you'll get a ton of hits. Many of them are very good. From my personal experience backpack hunting I will suggest that any weight you can cut, cut. I generally leave off the spotting scope, extra pairs of socks (I bring 2 and one is for the actual stalk). Also, I leave out the water purifier and bring iodine tablets plus emergenC (sorta like tang). I leave out extra arrows/ammo. I remove most things from their packaging and put them in individual plastic bags (like toothbrush, toothpaste, floss). Only food I bring is freeze dried stuff and power bars. You wont go hungry but you wont be gourmet either. Plenty of other tips for backpack hunting but these will get you started.
