Survival packs
 

I was just going through my day/survival pack today getting ready for my May bear hunt (yes I'm bored and the ice isn't thick enough at South Fork Res.) and thought of a subject that I haven't seen on this forum. I was just wondering what you guys have in your packs, as well as suggestions, and tips for keeping everything dry, accessible, etc. Here's what I have and will be getting.
25' 3/8" rope
50' parachute cord
Gerber bone/hack saw
Wyoming saw
Wyoming knife
Cutco 6" serated knife
Whistle
Reclosable sandwhich bags
Kleenex
2 pairs extra gloves
2 pairs extra socks(wool)
Extra leather shoe laces
Emergency blanket (vacuum sealed)
Signal mirror
Mini mag light w/ extra bateries
Flagging tape
Small first aid kit (vacuum sealed)
Compass
Gerber tool
Pocket knife with multi tools
Small knife sharpener
Military rain poncho (vacuum sealed)
Zippo w/ extra fluid (vaccum sealed)
4 small tent stakes
Magnesium firestarter w/ steel
Water proof matches
Bleached hemp rope w/ burnt 100% cotton (can
go into detail on this if any body has
questions)
3 quarts of water (1 military canteen w/cup
and a 70 oz. camel back)

Will be getting:
Small military trifold shovel
New buck knife (lost other one last deer season)
Game bags (ours got trashed last deer season too.)
I know this seems like a lot of stuff, but I should have enough stuff to completely quarter and hang a big game animal and stay with it for a while if I had to.

Seriously, if I were going way back that would all be nice, but I would trim it down if you were within a couple of miles of camp, especially all the cutlery.

I normally hunt a private camp with only a few hundred acres so my list isn't nearly as long as yours CB, but one thing I never leave camp without isn't even in your pack, Toilet Paper!!!

:You sound like my kind of packer with the gadget count, but i'd say a little heavy. Do you really need 2 saws and 3 ways to start a fire? They make some really inexpensive water filtration systems now to if you'll be around water and want to cut weight. I guess it all depends on what you want to be prepared for. I take enough to survive a night and then find my way out. Oh, and what about food?

Don't have most of that stuff. But guess you match your kit to the plan you have in mind. One thing I always carry is a small bit of old rubber inner tube. This is real handy for starting a fire, even with wet wood.

I USUALLY CARRY A COUPLE OF PACKETS OF INSTANT SOUP WITH ME, AND SOME DRY KINDLING. JUST IN CASE

Bro, you have way too much &quot;junk in the trunk&quot;.....

I'd cut out these items:
25' rope
gerber bone/hack saw (keep the wyoming saw)
dump one pair of gloves
dump one pair of socks
dump the shoe laces
dump the serated 6&quot; knife. YOu already have a gerber tool
dump the multi pocket knife.
dump the knife sharpener
hemp rope
dont need buck knife either.

As far as game bags go, you only need one on the trail. All the deboned meat can go into one game bag.

I'd put in some jerky and dried soup like someone suggested.

Thats it. I carry this when I hunt for an overnighter or two:

-water filtration system
-2qt canteen
-1 buck knife
-1 wyoming saw (small one)
-25' parachute cord
-signal mirror
-first aid kit
-2 survival blankets (which are my bedding at night. Very very light weight)
-game bag
-pack frame
-small 3'x6' plastic to lay on dry ground
layered thinsulate clothing (to strip off as the day gets warmer)
-snake bite kit (plunger/syringe type)
-small ham radio
-whistle
-matches/zippo (no extra fluid)
-mini mag lite
-very tiny one burner mountainer's/backpackers stove
-toilet paper
-military compass
-2 MRE'S, dried fruit, jerky, metrix-bars and/or power bars.

That will last me for at least 3 days, and two days to spare in case of emergency.

It's very light on the back too.
