RE: .270 & ELK

we use a lottery for controlled hunts, everything else is general OTC tags. but if you put in on a controlled bull elk hunt and draw, the next your you cant put in on another bull hunt. you have to skip a year. same goes for controlled buck hunts.

well right now non-resident elk is $372.50. but they are waiting to pass the new fee schedule which would make them $400-410.

Damn.... you're headed towards turning into Arizona ( very expensive hunting )..... haha, although it's a good way to keep the non-residents away and at home.

What's your feeling on a .270 & taking Elk?
What would be the maxium effect range?
I have a .243 for deer so the gun would be used on larger game.I don't want a gun w/ alot of recoil.
I'm open to suggestions.
I used a 270 Win for years on elk back when the only "premium" bullet available was a Nosler Partition. The 130 gr Partition was (and is) deadly on elk. Its all you will ever need to kill elk as long as you can hit where you aim.

With stuff like the Barnes TSX available todaythe situation has only gotten better. The 270 is all the gun anyone needs to kill elk. Go forth, shoot straight, and pack 'em out.

A .270 with a good weight retention bullet above .430 bc, 130 grains or heavier with good shot placement will put an elk down all day at 600 yards above 6000 feet elevation. Its all about practice and your abilities behind the gun. Practice, practice, practice. Take a good shot. Ethical choice, good rest and you will be fine. I wish you the best.

I hunt in the Rockies for elk every year and I'd say about 99% to 100%of the hunters I've met are cable of making a 600 yard shot on elk with a .270. They didn't practice much out past 100 yards, but they zeroed in 3 inches high at 100 yards, and they stayed at a Holiday Inn last night. What a crock of poo poo!

Even a great factory round is probably going to have a drop of4 1/2to 6 feet at 600 yards. When you are measuring the drop in feet instead of inches, there are only a handfull of guys that can make that shot on a regular basis. Not a single one of them are in our elk camp, and we hunt with some elk killing dudes. (including myself)
