Moose hunt ?
I have a question. My soon to be wife wants to go on a hunting honeymoon. Since I think this is the best idea in the world I feel its only fair to take her somewhere she can try and get the game of her choice. She relly wants to take a moose. Is there anywhere in the states to hunt these big animals that don't use a lottery system for tags? Any help would be appreciated.

Alaska. Everyplace else in the U.S. is on a lottery draw basis. If you are looking for high success rates and not neccessarily a huge trophy try Newfoundland.

You're not allowed to stoke such jealousy by posting that kind of porn around here! Cheers to the luckiest guy I've ever heard of! FC |
RE: Moose hunt ?
New Brunswick offers a very good chance of being drawn. If you both apply, you have a decent chance of one of you being drawn.
Tons of moose. |
RE: Moose hunt ?
New Brunswick has better draw odds than any US State ( other than AK) ...
Still, odds are about 1 in 20 ... If you and your bride both apply it may still take several years to draw a tag... Northern Ontario has some outfitted unguided or semi guided hunts that are fairly easy draws for non residents, but I don't know the details... Quebec has some easy draws ( 2 people per tag), but success rates tend to be low... Newfoundland is your best for a meat moose..OTC tags and very high success rates, but generally smaller moose and smaller racks...Prices are quite reasonable also.. Alaska has huge moose and lots of OTC areas, BUT it tends to quite expensive...DIY hunts are possible for less $$ than a guided hunt, but include lots of logistics, lots of backbreaking work if you are successful, and generally fairly low success rates... Guided Alaska hunts have much higher success rates and you have a guide to do a lot of the bull work ( pun intended) but are quite pricey... |

RE: Moose hunt ?
UTAH has landowner permits for Moose
You could check this out but these hunts will cost you. Some of these ranches have real nice lodges and are guided. |
RE: Moose hunt ?
Maine is hard to get a lottery draw but some get lucky at the first chance.. I am just not lucky at all.[:@]
Maine also has a bidding program where the highest bidder can getone of a fewmoose tags.. It is out of my reach though.. Though the highest bidder will get to hunt for one! I am not sure but I think there is six tags in all. |
RE: Moose hunt ?
Alaska, or Canada....
If looking in the states, drawing a ID moose tag is about your best chance....I think 1 in 8 chance....so for both of you ....2 in 8....not bad odds there. They have no pts for moose in ID, and require you to buy a license...hence the better odds. |
RE: Moose hunt ?
Thanks guys. Guess I'll save some extra money and get in two draw in the lower forty eight and if not drawn, we'll go to alaska or canada. I really want her to get a chance at one. My dream hunt is for red stag or elk. I'll wait for mine though since those are cheaper.

I just tried to PM you, to no avail...
I have some input if you want to PM me.... |
RE: Moose hunt ?
Its not inside the US border but it does have excellent success rates. "NEWFOUNDLAND"
I went in 2005. I will admit that the moose of Newfoundland usually don't carry the huge racks that other places do, but the chances of getting one are about 90%+ I went with this outfitter http://www.biggameoutfitting.com/about_us.html |
RE: Moose hunt ?
Thanks I'll check them out. PYGMY - Pm'd with my email.

RE: Moose hunt ?
I was in Newfoundland back in October. Seen a lot of moose. Even a good chance for trophy. Most what I saw was 36" to 40". Price is real reasonable. Only advice-if possible-DRIVE there. I flew, ran into snags on connecting flights up, then, just trying to make sure all the meat makes it home on the way back. Here'swho I went with:
Mountain Top Outfitters / Art Ryan 709-955-2804. Website is; mountaintopoutfitters.ca. If you contact them, tell them Mike from Indiana/USA referred them. Good Luck! |
RE: Moose hunt ?
Alaska is the place for you. If you work it right you can get into some really remote areas by air, and the price is reasonable.

RE: Moose hunt ?
Try www.aircochrane.comthis is a company i do a little work for they have some great fly in moose hunts. Maybe i could be your guide and camera man (at the camp) lol! Just kidding but check it out!

RE: Moose hunt ?
We have about one honeymoon couple at our camp almost every year. You'll have lots of fun hunting and honeymooning with her, you lucky dog. Our honeymnoon guests get the honeymoon suite...........the cabin furtherst away from the rest.......
A moose hunt, no matter where you go will be pricey. In Manitoba, you're looking at $6,000 each. I think that's why bear hunts being cheaper, are done more often for a honeymoon. |
