Yes yes yes YES. Black bears are not particuarrily hard to kill. 180grsoft pointammo is find. Dont waste your money on premium bullets, they definately arent needed.

For moose, I recommend a premium bullet. Hundreds of thousands of them have been shot with soft point ammo, but premiums level the field considerably.

Why do you recommend premium bullets for moose and not bear?? That just doesn't make sense to me.
The .308 will work fine on moose or black bear deernut07

Becauseblack bearssimply arent that difficult to kill. Browns and Grizzlies are another story (as im sure you're aware being from Alaska).

I live in Canada, black bear hunting is a big deal. Iveyet to see a black bear in my neck of the woods (Northern Ontario)that i'd be sweatingonly having a soft point bullet to use.

They arent nearly as resilient as most would believe.

I am a licensed Maine Guide and guide for bear and moose. First off you will need to win the moose lottery to hunt in Maine. Second, Moose are not particulatly tough to bring down, the bone structure is not overly dense. People have been caught poaching them with a .22 mag. Bears are a different story but a .308 would suffice. Your guide should review with you shot placement as their skulls and shoulders are thick. They are 10 times harder to kill than a moose.

Yup I would use a 308 without any question for black bear. I wouldn't use it for dangerous game like grizzleys or brown bear though.

Not to many years ago it seems most were on the magnum band wagon. A lot of misconceptions arose with any non magnum caliber. Heck a 35 rem is plenty for a black bear. Never hunted with a 30-30. I believe the above fellow may be correct with it as well with heavy bullets. I have seen many NC bears fall to the 35. I have personally used a 308 with 165 gr and never had a hickup.

Not much difference in the 308 and 30-06, maybe less than 100 FPS.

holy smokes i think this is the first thread i have ever seen where everyone agrees (including me) that the 308 will work on bear and moose. usually there is someone that always chimes in and says, "308? hell no, you need at least a 338 or bigger, maybe you should go with a .50 cal elephant gun instead. that should work"

anyways, i could go on and on. have fun hunting with your 308, they are a great gun for what you are hunting for!!
That might have happened IF the gentleman asked about Coastal Brown Bears, but, since he's asking about bears in Maine, he's obviously talking about blacks. .308 more than enough for blacks. Will do the job, but more marginal for the bigger bears.

Great round the 308 win....use a Browning BLR in 308 Win for years. On Blackbears suggest a 180gr Nosler Part load by Federal..........
