Antelope Question

Do antelope fight like deer do with their antlers and do antelope shed theirs in the fall/winter?

RE: Antelope Question

Yes, and yes. When in the rut antelope will push each other around with there antlers, but don' t seem to " fight" as much as whitetails do. Probably just because it' s harder with there rack being the shape that they are.

Lots of people will tell you that antelope don' t shed since when they lose there racks there is still a little " horn" there that is under the antler, so it looks like they have antlers year round.

RE: Antelope Question

Antelope don' t have " antlers" (made of bone like deer) they have " horns" (made of a hair or hoof type material). However unlike other animals with horns they do shed their horns.

RE: Antelope Question

Antlers means that the animal sheds them every year. Horns mean that they are always on.
That is the definition that I have always been taught

RE: Antelope Question

Antelope fight fierce battles during the rut in September. Many bucks which are taken have gauges out of their necks from the other bucks horns.
Antelope shed their horns in late October early November. The horn as I understand it is made of a hardened hair like substance which is quickly eaten up by small critters which is why sheds are not normally found from antelope. After they shed there is about a 6" internal base which remains on the buck.

RE: Antelope Question

Last year while hunting antelope in Wyoming I observed 3 buck antelope fighting. All three were the same size, 12-13 inchers, and it seemed when one got the better of the other the one that was standing by would jump in and continue. It lasted long enough that I was able to sneak up on them and watched at about 100 yards. I thought they were larger than they were, but!!! Also concerning the horn sheds, I currently have 2 complete sets of shed that my son and I had found during one of the antelope hunts that we did together.
