COLORADO UNIT 55

Has anyone ever hunted this unit? Did you have any success? I am looking at an outfitter that hunts this unit and since I have never hunted it before, I was looking for some comments. Thanks.

The unit is huge - Its kind of like asking what the hunting is like in Rhode Island. It depends on where you are in the unit. Is it private or public land?

RE: COLORADO UNIT 55

Have any of you ever hunted unit 56 northwest of Salida? What is the Elk hunting like in that area? I just drew an either sex archery tag for this unit, and any info would sure help. I have never hunted Elk before, but I am sure looking forward to it!

:)Tough unit. I hunted this unit last year and drew a tag this year also. I hope the draw helps nock down some of the pressure. I didnt hear a bull once and didnt see an elk until day 4. I shot one but after six hours of following good blood, it snowed about 1 inch. I am going back for revenge.

Iminrut,

What time during the season do you plan on being here-it makes a huge difference? If you come early, hunt high. If you come later, still hunt high. Generally the elk will be around 11,000 feet. Take a look at some of the areas north of Cottonwood Pass. Plan on walking your arse off! Get in the best shape of your life.

I am either coming the the first week or the third week, the one after muzzleloader season. I take it very seriously and get in the best shape I can be. I am coming out in a couple of weeks on a family vacation, cant wait to get back to the mountains,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Ive hunted this unit the past 2 years. Havent seen very many animals. Also, the weather was in the upper 60's, so it make it hard to find animals.

I hunted it a lot adn not had luck. But I've hunted with guys who did. Yes its a big unit. I like it for monster mulies as I can never find the elk, but as I posted below last yr I saw 11 bulls come out of there while I was chasing bucks and I know what hills they come off of so I guess I just need to hunt with the crowd.

Quick question, where have you hunted to see those 11 bulls? We have been hunting 55 for the past 2 years, last year i got a buck, but when it came to the elk, nothing. What hills were you hunting? We were in lost canyon most of the time. We also, hunted around the tin cup area.
