Revolver Hunters???
Do you guys hunt with scope or open sights? Those of you that hunt with scopes, which scope? Do any of you hunt with red dot scopes?

RE: Revolver Hunters???
I've used both hunting deer with a .44 Mag Redhawk. Never quite got used to the odd balance (and didn't have time to get used to it at the range first) with the scope. I found that I just couldn't react quickly enough at handgun range and sold the scope. I did connect with a doe a year later with iron sights.
I've also used a couple different "red dots", ranging from the garden variety Tascos on handguns to EOTechs on service rifles. Target shooting with a red dot at handgun range was lots of fun, but I think I'd have had the same issue in the field as I did with the scoped Redhawk. While an EOTech is great in bad Ahmed's house, it's not so good when he heard you coming and is running away with his AKacross the watermelon field 200 meters away UNLESS you have the magnifier (which I didn't). That "little" dot covers a lot of target as the range increases. All I can say is try it and see for yourself. You may be more comfortable than I was hunting deer (etc.) with a scope. I do use a scoped XP-100 in .223 for prairie dogs on occasion, but that's a bit different environment than deer. |
RE: Revolver Hunters???
I hunt with a 2x Weaver on my SBH. I like it. Depending on your expected range you may want a 4x or a variable. I keep my shots pretty close right now,(under 50 yds) but I feel I could extend my range easier (75-100 yds) with a 4x or variable model.

RE: Revolver Hunters???
I usea S&W M-29 withopen sights...
For me, if a handgun isscoped and/or has a long bbl.,you may as well carry a short rifle as there's not much difference... DM |
RE: Revolver Hunters???
I've always used open sights on my handguns, mostly because I've always had a hard time finding a handgun scope that I liked. And finding holsters that fit was always a pain too.

RE: Revolver Hunters???
My Ruger 5.5" Bisley has adjustable sights and no scopes on it for hunting. It is good to about 50 yards for me.
My dad has a Ruger SBH 10.5" barrel and a 4x scope on it. With this gun, I've taken deer out to 125 yards, but I think I would keep my shots under 100 next time. 125 is quite a ways. |
