30-06 Ammunition Help
 

Hello, I am shooting a 30-06 Savagerifle. I have a bushnell Elite 3200 scopeon it and I'm going to be going for moose and deer. I've been trying to sight it in but I don't know whats up. The scope's screws are tight and the scope is fine. The winchester 165 grain power point bullets grouped well, but the federal premiumtrophy bonded bear claw bullets didn't group well. I know the the TBBC bullets are really good but I haven't ever been able to group well with them.Are there anyfactorybulletsthat are as good for moose and deer? thanks Mark

I believe each gun has its favorite ammo. My TC Pro Hunter HATES Winchester ammo but I can hit a dime @ 100 yds with Federal Premium.

Rifles are like kids: they each have different appetites.

I've found my '06 likes 165's better than 150's, 180's or 220's. Among the 165's though, some shoot well out of a clean barrel, but not a dirty one. Oddly enough, others like a dirty barrel, & won't group for a hoot out of a clean one.

'Tis my understanding that the '06 won't push most cup & core bullets so fast that they'll come apart, so a "standard" 165 to 180 bullet oughta do fine for moose & deer. You can try Corelokts, Power Points, or Hot Cors, & see what your riflelikes best.

Or, if it will put your mind at ease, you can step up to the bonded bullets like Accubonds, Scirroccos, or CoreLokt Ultra's. They'll stay together better when crunching bones at close distances, and will give generally deeper penetration on moose. They're also designed to still offer some expansion, too, though not as much as the standard bullets. FWIW, I've gotten excellent accuracy andperformance fromHornady Interbonds.

Try a few different loads to see what your rifle likes, then go shoot a bunch of it to get comfy with your setup.

Federal loads the Barnes tsx which is an excellent bullet for deer or moose.Federal also loads the accubond and partition.I would try one of the three in 165gr.

I've seen std. 165's loose there cores on bigger animials numerous times, and if 165's are going to be used on moose, i'd go with a premium bullet to get more penetration. OR, go with 180's in a std. bullet...

go with the federal 180 barnes triple shock x bullet. or regular old soft points will work to. 180 grains is good for a mixed bag hunt.otherwiseif only going for moose i would recommend a 200 or 220 grain load , check out hornady if you are interested in a good heavier bullet.

I have had good success with the old Winchester Failsafes, and the Winchester XP3's in 180 grs.

Federal vital shok 180 Barnes TSX is a devastating load for deer or larger game and shoots well from both my 06's. It is way better shooting with more results than the Nosler Partitions I used to use.

Have you tried partitions?Most rifles can generaly do well with these vs more of your copper or bonded bullets.
The federal line has both 165 and 180's.I would be more inclined to use 180's for a all-around bullet.

have to share my thoughts on this--my favorite round for just that scenario is thefederal vital shok 165 NBT-- have used extensively over thelast6years, did the job on a 45"bull moose at about 275 yards, he went approx. 30 yards then dropped-- I also use that round consistently for whitetails. Heading west this fall for elk and mule deer, decided to bump up to the NP 180 grain-- but I would be very confident also going with thethe 165s.good luck. can't go wrong with either.
