I use to own a Remington Sendero in 7mm STW - which I sold to LadySooner's son. That weapon has dropped a bull Elk at 428 yds. It is a tack driver too. Pictured below is a 3-shot group at 100 yds.

EKM's math seems off to me. He counted several folks who admitedshooting whimpy 180gr bullets. By his initialdefinition it isn't a hammer unless it is 200gr or bigger no matter how fast it is moving.

I agree with "NPADEN".....and a 30-06 is a whimpy round in my book...IMO.

Make my vote a 300RUM!!!

No matter how many times you repeat the instructions the words

"high energy, deep penetrating, bone shattering, capable of handling unfavorable angles, slap'em down (without a CNS hit)cartridges. Also needs to be right at home with "plenty left over"at up to 300 yards. "

will be subject to interpretation. The only clear point was the weight of the bullet. Even that is revised to include a bullet clearly not 200 gr.

Fair enough, so adjusted. In the other case though it was 180 gr. TSX out of a 300 RUM which is a different story.
Those two were corrected a page ago, so hopefully you can get over it now.

The only clear point was the weight of the bullet. Even that is revised to include a bullet clearly not 200 gr.
Go to the first post of the first page where the mention of Barnes (which most people probably don't understand) has been from the beginning and has been repeated in every summary tally.
================================================== =

For folks who have actually taken elk and aren't whimps on recoil management and know how to shoot competently.... "What is your favorite "elk hammer?"
By "elk hammer" I'm not talking about the "just get by" cartridges, as in "archery rifles" (poke a hole in them on a perfect broadside, bleed 'em out, and then hope you can find 'em/retrieve 'em), I mean cartridges with 200+ grain heavy bullets (a little downward adjustment allowed for Barnes).... high energy, deep penetrating, bone shattering, capable of handling unfavorable angles, slap'em down (without a CNS hit)cartridges. Also needs to be right at home with "plenty left over"at up to 300 yards.

[BTW, rifle needs to be capable of being packed in elk country and shot off hand.]
[Info on bullet type & velocitiesis preferred.]
[Info on rifle is optional.]

Remember, if you haven't done it, it don't count.
You vote, I'll keep track.

I think your math is still off. I'm assuming you can hear the difference between an nosler accubond and a barnes bullet and that only an adjustment down for the 180 barnes bullets should be counted? You've included some on your list that specifically said 180gr bullets other than barnes and you've also included some that shoot calibers that have 180gr options other than barnes as well that didn't specifically state what bullet choice they were using.(Several of the .300 RUMs didn't state what bullet choice they were using)

The guy shooting 180gr bullets out of his .30-06 would bemake the listif they were Barnes though right?

EKM, I was just having a bit of fun, and I should have kept my mouth shut. My apologies.

Why don't you post a picture of your last elk, no matter what you killed it with?

I'll PM you a picture. It was killed with a .30-06 shooting 180gr bullets. I don't think it would be appropriate for this forum. (It is a cow elk in parts in the back of my pickup).

Well it's good to hear you have really killed an elk. I just don't understand why someone can't have a thread without people hacking on him.
