Personally if I was going to buy a 308, this is what I'd get:

Used or new, this would be the ideal hunting 308...

I hunt TN, mostly surrounded by woods, but I also hunt varied terrain, in Nebraska's NW panhandle, where there are plenty of long shots, and I use a Remington Model 673, it's an extremely accurate rifle, it's basically an adaption of the Remington Model 7, which is very expensive, but the "Guide Gun" (the 673's nickname), is about $600 brand new, give or take maybe $75, I got mine for about right price, it was on sale. Some think they're ugly, I love mine, it's unique stock is something that gives it a bit more of an identity, doesn't look bland-o plain walnut stock, which just doesn't work for me.
If you can, I would get a 2.5x10 scope, but 3x9 or even as big as 4x12 is good, too.
God Bless, good hunting!
