If you had to choose a place to go for elk....

If you had to choose a place to go for Elk in terms of being most successful where would you guys go ?

For simply any elk that would do, probably Colorado, otherwise probably northern NM.

Colorado has plenty of open land and a bunch of elk. I love hunting there.

I've hunted numerous times in Colorado and Idaho. Both have OTC tags for certain units. The one thing I experienced with CO was a LOT of hunting pressure. I'm sure you can get away from crowds if you know the right area, but the rifle seasons tend to be circuses. I hunt off my back and have found that I need to go 5-8 miles from a road in CO, versus 1-2 miles in ID. ID has some really rough terriain and that could be the reason.
Therefore, I'd say ID. I define success as more than taking an animal....that's certainly important, but solitude is much more. I think you'll find more elk in CO, just more people too.
my 2 cents

Coinsidently enough if you hunt elk in CO, you do have to choose where you are going if you want to be successful.
To just get the chance to shoot any elk...Ranching for Wildlife. Success runs in the high 80 percentile.
To get a large representative of the species......can't tell you but its in the southern central half.

IMHO Colorado has a lot of hunting pressure. I would say Utah or New Mexico if you're looking for a lot of elk with less pressure.

As a native Coloradan I can assure you that you can find many public hunting areas with great numbers of elk and few other hunters. It is doubtful that out of staters who spend one week a year here have a clue of where to go based on that experience alone.

Yep you're better off going to NM....but WY has more elk.
