Bear Hunt in Alaska - Recommendations
 

I am gathering information on bear hunting in Alaska (brown or grizzly). Any first hand knowledge would be greatly appreciated - guides/outfitters/areas/general thoughts? I am starting out broad and hope to narrow things down by this fall, for a hunt in 2003. Cost is not the primary issue, I am viewing this as a once in a long time trip.

Alaska has many good outfitters, but keep in mind that Alaska is not getting cheaper. There are probably 3 outfitters that I would personally hunt with for bear. The first is Dick Gunlogson. I have hunted with him and he is the #1 person to go with if money is not the issue and if you truly want a shot at an honest 10ft. bear. His camp for over 30 years, is at the end of the pennisula near the start of the Aleutian Islands in a real no-mans-land. His hunters have taken the #1 bear in Alaska in the APHA/SCI competition for the last 2 seasons!
The other outfitters are both located on Kodiak and would be Dick Rohrer and Mike Muncey of Muncey's bear camp. E-mail me if need contact info.
You may also want to consider Russia. That is where I am planning to go for the same bears that they have in Alaska. The difference is a much cheaper cost, a chance to hunt another country and virtually %100 success.

heck if its sucess you want hit the 40 mile country, with as many bears as they have there has to be some high sucess ratios or some seriously bad hunter/guides LOL!

It has been too long since I've lived in Alaska, all my info is out of date with the exception of rifle and calibre. The control feed was very popular with guides. The didn't seem too impressed with the push feed actions. If your going after Grizzly, any cartridge considered a good elk cartridge will do the job. The Brown Bear is a different story. I used a .30-06 with a 220 grain bullet. That was STUPID!!!!!! I would not suggest ANY 7mm or .30 cal. The .338 WM with a GOOD 250 grain bullet, such as the Nosler Partition, will do the job. If you are close to the coast, Gore-Tex clothing that covers from head to foot is a very good idea. It rains a lot up there. I hope you donot mind if I'm green with envy. just a limited recomendation experience also coming from a few friends who are guides both hunting and fishing (to include the big browns)....leave the gortex at home! Its heavy and by no means waterproof!
