RE: Need help picking out a .270 cal rifle
I will start, I have several Ruger M77's and absolutely love them. I just bought another one a few weeks ago and topped it with a Nikon Monarch 5-20X44, however that might be a bit high power just for hunting. The scope has good quality optics and can be bought for a real fair price (I bought mine for 420 to my door). Good luck...

RE: Need help picking out a .270 cal rifle
I'm a Remington guy so I say go with a model 700 of your choice. I've got stainless SPS's and XCR's and I love um. I would then throw a Leupold on top of it. The vx-1's are good scopes, but buy a vx-2 or 3 if you've got the $. 3-9x40's would be fine (3.5-10x40 if vx-3). Sounds like your runnin factory loads so I would go with a stout 130 or 140gr load(ie-Accubond, Interbond, Partition, Grand Slam, TSX).
Asfar as the .270 goes, it's a great choice as a western firearm. It'll do all you ask of it if you do your part. Good luck, Brett |
RE: Need help picking out a .270 cal rifle
I'm a Remington guy too. I have the Remington model 700xcr in 270wsm. I topped mine with a Burris Euro-Diamond 2.5x10x44mm with the Ballistic Plex retical.

RE: Need help picking out a .270 cal rifle
Remington 700 all the way. You can go with an SPS model and save some serious dough, or you can spend a little more and get a great wood stock in a BDL. Just take it down and get a trigger job after you pick it up and you will be very happy. I liked the info above about the Nikon Monarch, great scope. Just make sure to get a quality scope, Nikon, Leupold, or maybe Burris, all are great scopes, and you can go up from there.

RE: Need help picking out a .270 cal rifle
Savage Arms or the Weatherby Vanguard. Both are way cheaper than the Remington and both have better out of the box accuracy than the Remington 700.
|
RE: Need help picking out a .270 cal rifle
Id probably go with a Savage with a Nikon prostaff on it.. Gun is about 500, scope about 150.00

Need some recomendations! but here is my opinion... there is not a better value for your money than Savage...but if you want more refined parts and alittle more money...then the best value is Tikka... guaranteed accuracy...INCREDIBLE guns both spend their money where it matters, barrel and trigger...both will knowck down game when you want... spend more money on optics than on the gun...optics are the KEY to hunting out west here...I will take an average gun with above average optics and out shoot anyone with above average gun and average optics... my opinion on optics is spend atleast as much (more if going for Savage) on optics as you do on thegun, and you wont go wrong... |
RE: Need help picking out a .270 cal rifle
My .270 is a browning BAR and it shoots amazingly well. Though I have since become a bigger fan of bolt actions.
Remington 700, or Browning Abolt are great places to start, I'd choose a push feed over a controlled most likely, Sako 85 perhaps. Ormaybe a weatherby vanguard sub-moa.... I'd put at least a 3-9 on top of it, with a strong recommendation on a 4-12 or 4.5-14 type. |
RE: Need help picking out a .270 cal rifle
Savage
Remington Winchester Ruger Tikka Weatherby Browning etc.... Take your pick, learn your gun, and you won't be disappointed. Get good glass if it comes in a bubble pack and not a box leave it. If you think your spending to much on the glass you're probably in the right range. |
RE: Need help picking out a .270 cal rifle
Yes,the scope is more important than the rifle. An average rifle with a great scope is more valuable than the other way around.
Everyone has their likes and dislikes if you want a reasonable rifle with out of the box accuracy the inexpensive Weaterby's and the Tikka's would get my attention. For me the Tikka's because I don't like weatherby's factory stock. I own a Browning A-Bolt Stainless Stalker in a .270 and I wouldn't part with it for twice what I have in to it,so that should give you an idea of how much I love that rifle. |
RE: Need help picking out a .270 cal rifle
My choice was and still is the Remington SPS with the Bushnell 3200 Scope in 3x9x40. Cost effective and reliable.
|
RE: Need help picking out a .270 cal rifle
I have a remington 700 SPS SS with a Nikon Buckmasters Scope and LOVE IT. I didnt care for the flimsy stock so replaced it with a Bell & Carlson stock. The gun shoots good.
|
RE: Need help picking out a .270 cal rifle
Absolutely Love my Remington 700sps stainless 270wsm w/bushnell 3200 Firefly 5X15 I think the scope is being discontinued But you light that up and it cross hairs stays bright for a hour and a half in the morning and evening

RE: Need help picking out a .270 cal rifle
i would get a browning X-bolt or a tikka synthetic stainless!!
|
RE: Need help picking out a .270 cal rifle
1st off, how much do you want to spend? Everyone has a different version of small fortune. I would make sure that the rifle fits me, so head down to your local gun shoppe and try them out. The one that you want is going to be the one that you cannot afford, but its a good starting point. I saved for 3 years to get my Sako, but thats what called out to me. Wood/synthetic/SS you need to decide as well. Then most important is the glass. VXIII or Conquest at a min. BTW I just picked up the cheap 130 gr .270 federals for $12/box at Cabelas.
|
RE: Need help picking out a .270 cal rifle
those are the federals that shoot the best out of my .270 btw! I love it, cheapest load out there shooting the best....
|
RE: Need help picking out a .270 cal rifle
I have a .270 in the Howa 1500 and that is one accurate gun and not real expensize..so it will not break you and you can spend alittle more on a scope.

RE: Need help picking out a .270 cal rifle
I've had a Remington 700 BDL in .270 for many years. Its always been my go-to rifle. With a Leupold 3-9 scope, this rifle can drive tacks. As with all my rifles, someminorwork was in order on the OEM trigger.
Have been looking at getting a 300 win mag in a Remington XCR (extreme conditions rifle) and am still leaning that way. But today I was at Scheels and they had a Tikka, made by Sako of Finland, in a stainless model that is now giving the XCR some serious competition in my selection. The Tikka is a little cheaper (around $780 versus around $900 for the XCR), but this isn't a factor as I believe in getting top quality rifles/optics and keeping them forever. On an aside, Scheels also has their proprietery scopes, which are quality Nikons, but for a lot less $s. |
RE: Need help picking out a .270 cal rifle
PS. Looked at some .270 ammo today at Scheels. About fell over backwards - $34.99 for federal premiums with the 150 grainNosler Partition. Time to fire up the reloading press again.

RE: Need help picking out a .270 cal rifle
If your on a budget then I would look in this order, Savage the 11x line, Howa 1500 and Weatherby Vanguard. Like has been said you need to decide on wood, laminate, blue or stainless. I am also curious about the Remington 798/799 ( Remington's attempt at marketing a mauser action, made in Europe if forget if it is Cz or Serbia). I haven't heard any real world reviews on them yet though. Glass that's another subject. I personally prefer Leupold's on my hunting rifles for the eye relief but have been completely satisfied with Nikon's ( I own a Prostaff and Buckmaster) and Bushnell's ( suggest the Elite 3200 if you have the coin the 4200). When I first started out I had a Bushnell Banner on my 30-06 for several years which served me well until I started figuring out what was what and what I liked.

RE: Need help picking out a .270 cal rifle
I have a shooting range at my house ,so I get to shoot and see alot of different rifles.Out of the box the Ruger model 77 MARKII are really great shooters. Then savage next remington.I really like shooting a TC arms ENCORE,that is my favorite shooter.I said buy the scope first then buy the rifle next.Too many guys go buy a really nice rifle then go buy a 29.99 scope. then say that the rifle is not that good of a shooter.Ihave nothing but Leupolds on all my guns. There are alot of other good scopes makers out there.

RE: Need help picking out a .270 cal rifle
Rem 700 ADL in 270 was my first centerfire rifle as a kid, hunting the flat lands of Nebraska for deer and antelope, Ialways figured I could hand it down to my boys. Later on, once we startedhunting elk my kids and I abandoned the 270in spades. It won't do elk the way itdoes deer. Now it doesn't even make the trip to elk camp as a back up rifle.
Either a 7mmRemMag or 30-06 would have been a better choice. At 18 and 145 pounds my twin sonslatched on to my two 338WinMags (a Mossberg and a Sako); I got bumped up tothe 375H&H. My two cents.... 270's.... they're a nice deer rifle. Rem 700 was okay, I didn't know much better at the time, now I'd much prefer a CZ 550 American.... double square bridge mauser with claw extractor and controlled round feed, single set trigger, and a no tools required, hand strippable bolt mechanismand firing pin.... the safety locks down the bolt handle too. |
RE: Need help picking out a .270 cal rifle
I really like my Sav 111 pkg270, just wish they'd make em in a 26" barrel.

RE: Need help picking out a .270 cal rifle
Almost all current mnufactures make great rifles. I would handle the ones in your price range and see what fits you best. See how the saftey, bolt, and magazine controls work, and maybe go with a make and model that mimmicks a gun you are already familar with. If you are using for Muleys and Elk you will more than likely be in rough country with equally rough weather, so I would highley recommend a stainless synthetic setup.
For a scope, buy the most expensive you can afford, Leupold, Burris, both make many models, and their lower end scopes are usually still tough as nails. I would go with a 3x9 for the .270 or a 4x12, but would try to keep weight to a minimum, since you will want the gun scope combo to be easy and light to pack. You may want to get a scope with multiple aiming recticles, since they are handy for making the longer shots with confidence (buy a good rangefinder also, I have had good luck with nikons). Get it set up, find a load that shoots well at your 100 yard sight in distance, then get 50 to 100 rounds and spend a few days shooting at ranges from 35 yards to 500 yards to know your gun and capabilities. |
