The 300 WSM is actually both flatter shooting and harder hitting out past 500 yards according to Federals website. It lists the 165 grain Nosler Partition at 3200 FPS and the KE is over 3700 LBS/KE.

It would be interesting to see a match up. I am not partial to either gun. i own and reload for the 7mm mag but never punched paper past 450yds. just curious if same powder type, same grain bullet produces what result in both guns. not trying to argue, just curious. Again, both rifles are extremely well suited to the task. I do like the idea of a shorter rifle. whilelugging the 7 through the bush gnarreled swamp (with wood stock) is doable, you cant help cursing it a bit. For deer i love my .243 for that reason. If the 300 wsm is anything like it for size I might get me one too.

personally I love the 300wsm. I aslo prefer a 30 caliber bullet. I love everything about my 300 and it will handle anything in the states with ease.

Any animal up to an elk sized critter out to reasonable distances won't know the difference.

And 7 mm mag ammo is easier to find and cheaper. If you like to shoot a lot, that can add up.

I had a 300wsm built by HS presion and every critter has fallen with one shot, super hard hitting and doesnt kick to bad, that said I enjoy my 270wsm even more:-)

Bothare about equal on 90% of the game. But sometimes you need more bullet weight and that is where the 300 wins.

I use a 300 WM for almost all my deer size and larger game hunting. The 300 WSM is pretty much the same. I had a 7mm Mag
and got rid of it for a few reasons. Kicked harder, wasn't as accurate, and didn't have the range of bullets available.

30 cal is hard to beat for an all around caliber.

A comparison of the 150gr Nosler Balistic tips in both calibers (from the Federal Website):

The .300 WSM starts with a 225 fps advantage and about 500 ft lbs of energy ( at the muzzle) -Which isconsiderable.

At 400 yards the .300 WSM has a 100 fps and 150 ft lb advantage with basically the same trajectory (.5 of an inch to the 7mm @400 yards)

I also prefer the .30 cal for elk / moose sized game along with the heavier bullets - not available in 7mm and I've never had a problem finding .300 WSM ammo. Its here to stay.

In comparing several other bullet weights, the .300WSM is clearly more powerful.

I mis spoke on the above post - the comparison was of 150grFederal Accubonds in both calibers, not nosler ballistic tips.

Another advantage on the .300WSM is Federals new 130gr Barnes TSX bullet for .300wsm. Compared to the 7mm lightest bullet weight (140 gr)the .300 wsm has a 400 fps and 530 ft lb advantage at muzzle. At 500 yardsit has a 5 inch advantage over the 7mm.This bullet choice makes the .300WSM better fordeer / antelope sized game as well.

I plan to use them on whitetail this year.

I have a 7mm mag and I would'nt trade it for anything. Both guns are great guns, but it depends on your personal preference. I have killed antelope, bear, and deer with mine and they were all at long ranges. The 7mm combined with the right ammo shoots flat and acks a punch.

The 7 Rem Mag is more readily available than the WSM's.
And just as capable.
I never got on the WSM bandwagon. I don't think they will stand the test of time.
